Maryland Beats Mercer 3-1, Jones Moves Up In The Record Books

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA -- The Terps (7-3) kicked off their three games in Virginia with a 3-1 (25-22, 25-17, 22-25, 25-18) win against Mercer as Rainelle Jones moved to second place in program history in career blocks. 

After being knotted at 19 apiece, Maryland finished the first set on a 6-3 run to secure the victory thanks to a pair of kills by Anastasia Russ and two Terp blocks. 

The Terps dominated the second frame and earned a 25-17 win. Lexy Finnerty recorded back-to-back service aces at one point and Sam Csire and Laila Ivey each added two kills. 

After dropping a close third set, the Terps rebounded with a dominant final frame, led by an outstanding seven kills by Ivey.

Career Days
  • With her third block in the first frame, Jones reached 603 career blocks and claimed sole possession of second place overall, passing Stephanie Smith. She finished with 10 total blocks, good for 610 total. 
  • Sydney Dowler set a new career-high with eight blocks. 
  • Ellie Watson recorded five blocks, also setting a new career-high. Her three kills tied a career-high.
  • Gem Grimshaw, a Temple transfer who has been sidelined with injury, recorded a trio of kills in the third frame, her first ones in a Maryland uniform. 
  • Laila Ricks' three kills today gave her exactly 300 overall.
  • Ivey recorded a team-high 11 kills and now has 102 total in her young career. 
  • Maryland's 18 blocks were a season high.
