COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Despite a strong defensive effort in which Maryland held No. 24 Wake Forest to its second-lowest shot total of the season, the Demon Deacons came out on top 1-0 and handed the Terps their first loss of the season.
The two sides were deadlocked in a defensive struggle for most of the game until Giovanna DeMarco scored the decisive goal for Wake Forest (6-0-1) in the 65th minute.
Coach Meghan Ryan Nemzer's Take
"Wake's midfielders are probably the best midfield group that we've seen all year, and we knew that coming in. We tried to make other people be playmakers and we focused a lot on being organized defensively. I thought they did that very well. I thought the goal that (Wake Forest) scored on was the only good opportunity they had. Yeah, they had shots but they were from a distance. I thought the team gave a great effort, they worked hard and they stuck to the gameplan."
Player's Perspective
"I think when you play a team like Wake, we committed all of our numbers behind,"
Sydney Urban said. "We sat back and sort of let them keep the ball 80 yards away from the net, which was our gameplan. We actually did hit our gameplan to a tee. We just need to work now on transitioning out of that tucked-in formation to a higher formation where our forwards stretch the field a little more."
