Six Terps Named Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-Americans

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Six Terps were named to Inside Lacrosse's 2023 Preseason All-American Team. Close defenseman Brett Makar and face-off man Luke Wierman were named to the first team while the second team featured midfielder Kyle Long, defenseman Ajax Zappitello and goalie Logan McNaney. Long-stick midfielder John Geppert was named an honorable mention All-American. 

Now entering his fifth season at Maryland, Makar was the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, an Inside Lacrosse First-Team All-American and a USA Lacrosse Second-Team All-American in 2022 in addition to All-Big Ten First Team honors. Makar has started all 57 games of his career as a Terp. He had 32 groundballs and 15 caused turnovers with a goal and two assists last season. 

Wierman was an Inside Lacrosse First-Team All-American and USA Lacrosse Second-Team All-American after the 2022 season in addition to being named the 2022 Big Ten Specialist of the Year. He holds the Maryland record for face-offs won in a season with 298 and face-offs taken with 451. The senior also had 160 groundballs while scoring eight goals and seven assists for 15 points in 2022. 

Long, now back in College Park for his fifth season, earned All-American and Second-Team All-Big honors in both 2021 and 2022. Last season, he scored 17 goals and record 25 assists for 42 points. 

Zappitello was a Third-Team All-American by both Inside Lacrosse and the USILA in 2022. The junior led the Terps with 27 caused turnovers to go along with 26 groundballs last season. 

McNaney, the 2022 NCAA Tournament's Most Outstanding Player, earned All-American honors in both 2021 and 2022. The senior finished last season with a 59.7 save percentage along with a 8.44 goals against average. 

Geppert, an Honorable Mention Inside Lacrosse All-American and member of the All-Big Ten Second Team in 2022, caused 13 turnovers and recorded 52 groundballs. The graduate student also scored five goals with his long-stick. 

Maryland will open its 2023 season on Feb. 4 when Richmond comes to College Park to play at SECU Stadium.
