KNOXVILLE, TENN -- Sophomore Nicha Kanpai and senior Patricie Mackova both tied for fourth to lead No. 37 Maryland to a third-place finish at the Mercedes Benz Intercollegiate Tuesday at the Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn.
Kanpai and Mackova each finished with an overall score of 209, which was four strokes under par. Kanpai shot a 69 in both the first and third rounds and a 71 in the second round. Kanpai racked up 11 birdies and an eagle, which came in Tuesday's final round.
Mackova picked up her first top 10 finish of the year. She shot a season-low 67 in the first round Sunday, then 70 in the second round Monday and a 72 in the final round. She finished with 11 birdies as well.
Graduate student Virginia Bossi set a new career low Tuesday with a 65 in the round. That is also the Terrapins' lowest individual round of the season. Bossi and teammate Maria Vittoria Corbi tied for 29th with scores of 217, which was +4. Corbi shot a 70 in the first round, then a 76 in the second round Monday and a 71 Tuesday.
"This was a great week for the Terps," head coach Kelly Hovland said. "We played an extremely difficult golf course with commitment and an aggressiveness that you need to be an elite team. We struggled for a stretch yesterday in the challenging weather, but bounced back with determined final round. This tournament showed how much character this team has and we should carry that confidence into our final event next week."
Competing as an individual, sophomore AnPhi Le earned a score of 225 (77-78-70), which was +12. Junior Panassaya Somchit earned a score of 226 (77-76-73), which was +13.
The Terps tied with No. 22 Pepperdine for third as they went even with a score of 852 (283-292-277). Their team score of 277 Tuesday was a season-best.
Next, the Terrapins will close the fall season at the Landfall Tradition Oct 27-29 in Wilmington, N.C.
