Popper's Second-Half Goal Lifts No. 9 Terps Past American, 2-1

Box Score WASHINGTON, DC --- The No. 9 Terps wrapped up non-conference play at American on Sunday with a 2-1 victory in the nation's capital.  The Terps move to 10-3 overall and finish the non-conference slate with an 8-2 overall record.

Sammy Popper notched the winning goal towards the end of the third quarter to break a 1-1 tie and bring the Terps to victory. Hope Rose scored Maryland's other goal.

Alyssa Klebasko made five saves. Maryland outshot American 18-10 and held an 11-2 advantage in penalty corners.

Breaking Down The Action
  • Ashlyn Carr sent in a rocket shot from the Top of the circle and junior Hope Rose got a quick stick on the ball to put it into the cage. Rose gave the Terps an early lead within the first three minutes of the game.
  • American found the equalizing goal with just under two minutes remaining in the first quarter with a backhand shot that flew just over the right shoulder of freshman Alyssa Klebasko.
  • The first half remained a defensive battle as both teams held at one goal apiece. Maryland was awarded six penalty corners in the first 30 minutes, but were unable to capitalize.
  • Graduate student Sammy Popper took back the lead with 2:14 remaining in the third quarter. Margot Lawn inserted the penalty corner to Maura Verleg, who faked a pass to Josie Hollamon and sent the ball to a waiting Popper. Popper sent a slap shot towards the cage that deflected off a defender's stick and above the head of American's keeper.
