No. 20 Terps Pull Out 83-81 Win Over Syracuse

Box Score COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Keyed by an 8-0 run near the end of the third quarter, No. 20 Maryland held Syracuse off in the final seconds and topped the Orange 83-81 on Sunday afternoon in the XFINITY Center.

Four players hit double-digit scoring: Allie Kubek (23), Shyanne Sellers (19), Bri McDaniel (12) and Lavender Briggs (10).

Kubek paced the Terps in scoring all afternoon, in her best game in a Maryland uniform. McDaniel started the second half and brought instant energy, specifically on the defensive end. Sellers and Kubek each notched eight boards apiece.

Syracuse had possession and was within two points in the closing seconds, but the Terps held them off, getting a key defensive stop that ended in a Syracuse turnover.

The Terps forced the Orange into 18 turnovers, getting 23 points off them. Maryland out-scored Syracuse 37-10 in bench points.

The Terps are now 2-2 on the season and 2-0 in the XFINITY Center. Syracuse suffered its first loss of the season, dropping to 3-1.
Coach Brenda Frese's Take
"I thought we started really strong," said Frese. "I thought we looked a little fatigued in that second quarter when we took a dip. I loved the response at halftime out of the locker room. Our bench was really, really good, which you have to be able to have. You saw the spark off the bench from Allie, just alone in the first quarter, as well as the whole game. She is fun; We challenged her at halftime with her rebounding and she just made some big, huge rebounds for us."

"Obviously, Bri on both ends from her practice yesterday and just seeing her energy today. Lav, as well, just gave us some phenomenal things."

From The Girls
"I knew I had to come in and be ready," said Bri McDaniel. "This is an ACC/Big Ten matchup, so I can't be scared. I have to come out there ready to play and give my team what they need."

"Allie is super vital for us," Shyanne Sellers said when asked about Allie Kubek's role. "I mean, having another big come off the bench for us is huge. Obviously, being able to come off an ACL injury and today was 10/14 from the field and played 30 minutes - I think it's huge. She will be good for us in the long run."
