COLLEGE PARK, MD – The No. 22 ranked Terps picked up four ranked victories against No. 18 Pittsburgh, but the Panthers prevailed in the last bout of the night, handing Maryland its first dual loss of the season, 21-16, Monday night at the XFINITY Center Pavilion.
Â
After falling into an early deficit, the Terps took the upper hand with a pair of upsets from
Braxton Brown and
Kal Miller at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively.Â
Â
Brown made his debut at 133 pounds, scoring a takedown and a reversal to pick up his first win at the weight over No. 13 Vinnie Santaniello. Miller jumped out to a huge advantage over Cole Matthews, a 2022 NCAA All-American, in the first period with a takedown and a four-point nearfall in succession, then cruised to a major decision. The victory marked Miller's highest-ranked win to date, as Matthews entered the bout ranked No. 7.
Â
Ethen Miller and
Michael North maintained the victory run with a pair of decisions at 149 and 157, respectively, building the Terps' lead heading into the break.
Â
The Panthers leveled the score with a technical fall and decision win out of the break and secured a five-point advantage with another tech.
Â
Jaxon Smith collected Maryland's fourth ranked victory of the evening, upending No. 18 Mac Stout by decision to send the evening to a decisive contest at 285. At heavyweight, the Panthers prevailed to exact revenge on the Terps after Maryland won the dual between the programs last season.
Maryland falls to 1-1 on the season while Pittsburgh improves to 4-1 this year.
