Wyche Tosses Three-Hit Shutout In 3-0 Win Over Michigan State

COLLEGE PARK, MD – The Terps topped Michigan State, 3-0, in the first game of Friday's doubleheader. In their first Big Ten win of the season, the Terps recorded their ninth shutout as a team. Maryland moved to 24-8 on the season while MSU fell to 10-15.

Courtney Wyche pitched lights out in her second complete-game shutout of the year, spinning five strikeouts and only allowing three hits across seven innings. This was the senior's second sixth shutout of her career.

Maryland's defense also came to play, headlined by a Campbell Kline hit-robbing catch on the warning track.  Michaela Jones' three-run triple in the first inning carried the Terps on offense. Jaeda McFarland, Sydney Lewis, and Sammi Woods also had hits in the game.
Breaking Down The Action
  • After making quick work of the Spartans in the top of the first, Maryland's offense put the team on the board. With McFarland on third, Lewis reached first base off a fielder's choice, before she stole second. Amelia Lech converted for a walk to load the bases. Michaela Jones then smashed an RBI triple to the right centerfield wall, clearing the bases and putting the Terps up 3-0.
  • In the top of the fourth, Kline made an impressive on-the-run catch, robbing the Spartans of an extra-base hit.
  • Maryland made another great play in the top of the sixth, this time by the catcher Lech on a high pop-up against the wall behind home plate.
  • Wyche cemented her victory with a three-pitch strikeout looking.
Numbers To Know
  • 3: Goff, McFarland, and Lewis all swiped a bag in the bottom of the first for a total of three stolen bases in one half inning.
  • 4: This was Wyche's fourth complete game of the season.
  • 5: Excellent Terps pitching stranded five Spartans on base.
  • 26: With her complete game today, Wyche tallied 26 career complete games.
  • 65: Maryland stole four bases in this game, moving them to 65 on the season.
  • 98: Adding five today, strikeout queen Wyche currently has 98 Ks.
