Terps Blank UMBC To Capture 30th Win Of Season, Most Since Joining Big Ten

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland beat UMBC, 9-0, to take their 30th win of the season, the most wins for the program since joining the Big Ten in 2014. The Terps also posted their 14th shutout of the season. With the win, Maryland advanced to 30-13 (6-8 BIG) while UMBC dropped to 17-13.

Courtney Wyche shut out the Retrievers across 4.0 innings, tallying four strikeouts in the circle. Trinity Schlotterbeck came in to record the final three outs of the Terps' five-inning victory, tossing two-straight strikeouts of her own.

Schlotterbeck also led the way on offense, smashing a three-run homer to deep center field. The senior finished 2-2 with two hits, four RBIs, and two runs scored. Jaeda McFarland dominated at the plate as well, going 2-2 with two RBIs and a triple. Kiley Goff, Kamryn Davis, Mackense Greico, and Megan Mikami scored Maryland's additional seven runs.
Breaking Down The Action
  • Wyche set the tone for Maryland in the top of the first, spinning two strikeouts against Retriever batters.
  • The Terps wasted no time on offense, scoring three runs in the first inning. After her leadoff walk, Kiley Goff touched home first thanks to a Mackense Greico sacrifice. Schlotterbeck singled to drive in McFarland and Michaela Jones doubled, knocking in Schlotterbeck.
  • Maryland added another six runs in the second inning, beginning with an RBI triple by McFarland that scored Goff and Megan Mikami. Sydney Lewis followed up with an RBI single, driving in McFarland. After a Greico walk, Schlotterbeck launched a three-run home run, allowing Lewis and Greico to round the bases.
  • Wyche followed the Terps' explosive bottom of the second with a one-two-three top of the third.
  • Facing a no-out bases loaded jam, Maryland's defense came in clutch, beginning with a heads up throw by Taylor Liguori to catcher Amelia Lech to secure the out at home. Wyche then struck out the next Retriever batter in five pitches before UMBC popped up to Schlotterbeck for the final out. The Retrievers remained scoreless going into the bottom of the fourth.
  • In for Wyche, Schlotterbeck recorded a one-two-three fifth inning, beginning with back-to-back Ks.
