COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Two members of the Maryland baseball program earned Big Ten Weekly Awards, the conference announced Monday. Shortstop
Matt Shaw has been named Big Ten Player of The Week, while left-handed pitcher
Kyle McCoy earned Freshman of The Week honors.
Matt Shaw earns his second weekly honor after serving as the offensive catalyst for five consecutive Terrapin victories over the past week, including a three-game sweep over Indiana. The Junior batted .522 with 12 hits, four home runs and eight RBI. The four home runs hit by Shaw all came in consecutive games including each day of the Indiana series. Shaw is just the fourth player in Terrapin history to hit a home run in four consecutive games and the only player in program history to ever do it twice. With his first home run of the week on Wednesday, April 26 against Georgetown
Matt Shaw passed Paul Schager for first all-time in career home runs with his 44th career blast.
Kyle McCoy received his third Big Ten Weekly award after continuing his excellent freshman campaign this week. McCoy set the tone as the Saturday starter and helped the Terps earn a 16-2 victory in Bloomington, Indiana. In just his second Saturday start McCoy allowed just five hits and one earned run across seven innings. The Ringoes, NJ native held the Hoosiers to a .200 average on the day and did a tremendous job forcing bad contact for easy outs.
