Locksley Announces Spring Award Recipients

In 2019, Maryland Football Head Coach Michael Locksley started a spring awards tradition that honors past Terrapin greats. At the conclusion of the Red-White Spring Game each season, Locksley handed out a variety of awards to current players. Each award will be named after a Terrapin legend with the award names changing each year. Here are this year's 16 awards.
 
Ed Modzelewski Headhunter Award

The No. 6 overall pick in the 1952 NFL Draft, Modzelewski was part of the undefeated 1951 Maryland team that outscored its opponents, 381-74. A Second Team All-American, Modzelewski finished the season with 825 yards and averaged 7.3 yards a carry.

The winners are… Corey Bullock, Jordan Phillips and Caleb Wheatland.

J.C. Jackson "I Like to Practice" Award 

Jackson has had a phenomenal NFL career since breaking into the league as an undrafted free agent in 2018, totaling 173 tackles, 55 pass breakups and 25 interceptions. He was named an All-Pro in 2021 after leading the league with 23 pass breakups

The winners are…Corey Coley Jr., Rex Fleming, Colby McDonald and Gereme Spraggins
J.C. Jackson I Like to Practice Award
Quinton Jefferson Defensive Lineman Award

Jefferson played four years for the Terrapins between 2012-2015, playing in 38 games and totaling 107 tackles, 10.5 sacks and 21.5 tackles for loss. Now a member of the New York Jets, Jefferson has totaled 158 tackles and 20.5 sacks in his NFL career 

The winners are… Tommy Akingbesote and Taizse Johnson

Todd Wike Offensive Lineman Award 

Wike was a Terp from 1999-2002 and was a member of the 2001 ACC Championship team, earning All-ACC honors and starting in all 11 regular season games that season

The winners are… Delmar Glaze and Aric Harris

Rick badanjek most improved freshman award

Badanjek was a running back for the Terps from 1982-85 where he ran for 2,417 yards and 44 touchdowns on 521 carries, helping lead Maryland to three straight ACC Championships. 

The winners are… Preston Howard and Lionell Whitaker
Preston Howard & Lionell Whitaker
larry webster community service award

Webster was a two-time All-ACC selection after transitioning from tight end to defensive tackle and was named Maryland's team MVP in 1991. He went on to play in 136 games throughout his NFL career, tallying 36 starts, 186 total tackles and four sacks with the Miami Dolphins, Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets 

The winners are… Tyrese Chambers, Quashon Fuller, Robert Smith
Mark Duda most improved player award

Duda was a defensive tackle for the Terps from 1979-1982, where he recorded 19 sacks, 13 of which in his senior season. He would go onto play 55 games in the NFL from 1983-87 and is now the head coach at Lackawanna College, where he won the NJCAA National Football Championship in 2019

The winners are… Ramon Brown, Conor Fagan, Tai Felton, Sean Greeley and Kyle Long.
Bill Supplee Commitment to Excellence Award 

Supplee was the first Maryland football player to receive All-America honors in 1923 and was selected to the All-South Atlantic and the All-Maryland football teams the following year as well.

The winners are… Corey Dyches, Billy Edwards Jr., Ruben Hyppolite II and Riyad Wilmot
Dennard wilson leadership award

Wilson was a three-year starter at defensive back for the Maryland Terrapins, appearing in 42 games (30 starts) from 2000-03. He totaled 158 tackles and was an honorable mention All-ACC performer as a senior captain after leading the Terrapins with 12 passes defensed. Wilson is now the defensive backs coach for the Baltimore Ravens

The winners are… Fa'Najae Gotay, Antwain Littleton II and Amelio Morán

Louis carter offensive back award

Carter ran for 2,331 yards and scored 25 touchdowns over a Terp over three seasons from 1972-74. He would go onto play four seasons in the NFL for the Oakland Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, rushing for 940 yards and four touchdowns

The winner is Roman Hemby
Scott tye outstanding non-scholarship player award

Tye played for the Terps in the mid 1980s and helped the Terps win the 1985 Cherry Bowl by returning a fumble for a touchdown in the 35-18 Maryland win

The winners are…Eli Mason and Christian Teague
darnell savage defensive back award

Savage was selected in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers where he has played four seasons, totaling 251 tackles, nine interceptions and 31 pass breakups. A Second All-Big Ten selection in 2018, Savage had 182 tackles, eight interceptions, one sack and two touchdowns as a Terp

The winners are… Beau Brade and Tarheeb Still
neil olkewicz linebacker award

Olkewicz led the Terps to bowl games in all four seasons as a Terp and led the Terps defense in 1978 by making 188 tackles, the single-season school record to this day. He would go on to be one of the best players in Washington Redskins history, winning two Super Bowls in 1982 and 1987

The winners are…Jaishawn Barham and Kellan Wyatt
Geroy simon wide receiver award

Simon ranks second all-time in program history with 185 receptions and fifth all-time in career receiving yards with 2,059. He set a then ACC record with 77 catches for 891 yards and 5 touchdowns as a sophomore before going onto have a prolific Canadian Football League career, getting inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2017

The winners are… Jeshaun Jones and Kaden Prather
Dale Castro special teams award 

Castro was a First Team All-American kicker in 1979 after setting a then-NCAA record when he made his first 16 field goal attempts. Castro holds the program record for most field goals in a game with five and stands top-15 in program history in career punting yards, total field goals and field goal percentage

joe campbell most valuable lineman award

Named after Campbell, who led the Terps to four straight bowl games and was named a consensus All-American during his senior season. Campbell was selected seventh overall in the first round of the 1977 NFL draft by the New Orleans Saints. After playing just over three seasons for the Saints, he was traded to the Oakland Raiders where he would go on to earn a Super Bowl ring during the 1980 season.

Dennard Wilson Leadership Award
frank reich mvp award

Named after Reich, who is known for leading the Terps back from 31-0 down against Miami in 1984 to win 42-40. Reich was drafted in the third round by the Buffalo Bills and would go onto throw for 6,075 yards and 40 touchdowns in his NFL career. He is now the head coach for the Carolina Panthers.  

The winner is Tyrese Chambers
