COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland baseball student-athletes
Matt Shaw,
Luke Shliger and
Nick Lorusso were each named national All-Americans by Collegiate Baseball News, the organization announced Thursday.
Matt Shaw was named a first-team selection, while Shliger and Lorusso earned second-team honors.
Shaw, was recently named a Brooks Wallace Award finalist and selected as a semifinalist for the prestigious USA Golden Spikes Award. The Brimfield, Massachusetts native is the only player in the nation to be named on both lists. The 2023 Big Ten Player of the Year is the in the midst of a historic season for the Terps, batting .347 with 23 home runs, 87 hits and 67 RBIs. This marks the first career All-American honor for
Matt Shaw after being a first-team All-Big Ten selection in both 2022 and 2023.
Shliger, who was also named a Buster Posey Award Semifinalist has been a force as the Maryland captain in 2023. The Danbury, Connecticut leads the Terps with a .521 on-base percentage while leading the nation in runs (88) and sitting second in walks (65). The 2023 All-Big Ten First Team selection became the Maryland all-time leader in runs scored, passing Associate Head Coach
Matt Swope (1999-2002) who held the record with 181. A catalyst out of the lead-off position in the lineup, Shliger earns his first career All-American honor in his junior season.
Lorusso, the national leader in RBI with 99 so far in 2023, has been one of the most dangerous hitters in all of college baseball. The Monroe, Connecticut native Senior
Nick Lorusso is on pace for one of the best individual season in Maryland baseball history as he leads the team in hits (93), RBI (99), and batting average (.369). The 2023 All-Big Ten First Team honoree currently holds the Maryland program record for single-game (8), single-season (99) and career (169) RBIs, doing so in just two years with the Terps. Lorusso's 99 RBI are the most for any Division I college baseball player since Billy Becher tallied 118 for New Mexico State in 2003. Named the Big Ten Tournaments Most Outstanding Player, this is the first career All-American honor for Lorusso.
