Matt Shaw Named Brooks Wallace Award Recipient

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland baseball shortstop Matt Shaw has been named the 2023 Brooks Wallace Award winner, the College Baseball Hall of Fame announced Tuesday. The Brooks Wallace Award is presented annually to honor the nation's most outstanding shortstop.

The 2023 Big Ten Player of the Year, Shaw, completed one of the best seasons in Terp history, batting .341 with 24 home runs, 90 hits and 69 RBIs. A first-team All-Big Ten selection in both 2022 and 2023 Shaw set the Maryland all-time home run record, finishing his illustrious career in College Park with 53 home runs passing Paul Schager (1984-87). A Brimfield, Massachusetts native Shaw was named a Collegiate Baseball First Team All-American and was ranked the No. 1 shortstop in college baseball by D1Baseball during the 2023 campaign.

The award is a tribute to Brooks Wallace, the outstanding shortstop at Texas Tech from 1977-80 who passed away at age 27 after a courageous battle with leukemia. Brooks Lee (Cal Poly) won the 2022 Brooks Wallace Award after earning the two-straight Big West Conference Field Player of the Year selections. Previous award winners include Grae Kessinger (Ole Miss), Dansby Swanson (Vanderbilt), Trea Turner (NC State) and Alex Bregman (LSU).
