Masonius, Nitzl Receive Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Awards

ROSEMONT, IL -- Faith Masonius of women's basketball and Alex Nitzl from men's soccer are the Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners for Maryland.

Nitzl was named men's soccer's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner after not receiving a yellow card in 1,356 minutes of play during the 2022 season. The junior helped the Terp win the Big Ten Regular Season Championships, starting all 16 matches he played and recording four assists. He was also an Academic All-Big Ten selection.

The Munich, Germany native, who was recently named the James H. Kehoe Award winner for outstanding sportsmanship at the 2023 Terp Awards, was chosen as a captain by head coach Sasho Cirovski this spring and will wear the captain's armband for the Terps for the 2023 season.

Masonius earned women's basketball's Big Ten Sportsmanship award in March. The senior started in all 35 games for the Terrapins and was voted one of the team captain's captains. She played a huge role as a leader in bringing a team together that included nine new players.

Masonius, a native of Spring Lake, N.J., returned to the court less than 10 months from suffering an ACL injury in January 2022. Masonius averaged 6.9 points, 4.9 rebounds for the Terrapins as the team's "glue" player.

Masonius also earned the James H. Kehoe Award for outstanding sportsmanship by a male and female Terrapin student-athlete.
