No. 14 Terps Fall To Missouri State In Season Opener, 1-0

COLLEGE PARK, MD – The No. 14 Terps opened the 2023 season with a hard-fought 1-0 loss to Missouri State.
The Bears notched the game's lone score in the 31st minute as a bouncing ball after a corner kick managed to sneak into the back of the net. Maryland, which was without veteran midfielders Alex Nitzl and Albi Ndrenika, started four players that were not on last year's roster.
The Terps return to Ludwig Field on Sunday night for a top-15 matchup against No. 10 UNC Greensboro. The game will air on Big Ten Network.

Breaking Down The Action
- The two sides combined for just four shots in the first half. One of those shots found the back of the net for the Bears, giving them a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute.
- The Terps came up with a big team save to keep it within one in the 56th minute as Lowell did a nice job coming out to deflect a Bears shot before Kulvik cleared it off the line.
- Maryland controlled possession for much of the second half but was unable to find an equalizer. The Terps' best chance came on a free kick in the 77th minute that Thiesen was able to get his head on, but the shot sailed wide.

- Three of the Terps' starters were freshman: McDaid, Koehl and Stewart-Baynes
- Additionally, West Virginia transfer Bjarne Thiesen started his first game as a Terp.
- Freshman Kenny Quist-Therson, Tyler Prebenda, Henrik Sakshaug, Cameron Gerber, Joe McDaid and Luke van Heukelum all made their Maryland debut as well.
