Late Offensive Surge Lifts No. 3 Terps Past Cal, 4-1

Box Score Berkeley, CA -- The No. 3 Terps used a pair of late fourth-quarter goals from Hope Rose within 1:04 seconds to break a 1-1 tie and propel themselves to a 4-1 win over California. Sammy Popper also tallied a score in the final few minutes of play.

The two teams were deadlocked at 1-1 for all of the third quarter and most of the fourth until Rose broke through for two scores and Popper added another, bringing Maryland to 2-0 on the season.

Margot Lawn scored the first goal for the Terps and came up with the assist on Rose's go-ahead goal. Freshman Maci Bradford continued her hot start to her collegiate career with an assist.   Breaking Down The Action
  • Both defenses made statements early as the first shot came from Cal halfway through the first quarter. Maryland had a few early odd-man rushes but couldn't find the back of the cage.
  • The Golden Bears struck first with a goal within the final minute of the first quarter.
  • After a green card was given to Cal, the Terps wasted no time attacking the cage. Margot Lawn found the equalizer with a sneaky assist from Maci Bradford early in the second quarter.
  • Cal was granted two back-to-back corners with just under two minutes remaining in the half, but both efforts were turned down by the Terp defense, including a save from Paige Kieft.
  • The Terps made a switch at goaltender after the half with Alyssa Klebasko defending the cage. Her first test came with 9:27 remaining in the third quarter when the Golden Bears had a corner. Hope Rose blocked the initial shot, sending the ball the other way.
  • Maryland received three back-to-back corners within the final minute of the third quarter but struggled to convert.
  • On the 11th corner of the game, Hope Rose converted to give the Terps their first lead of the match with six minutes remaining in the game.
  • Shortly after, Rose stole the ball and with three defenders in front of her, extended the lead to two with a precision shot from the corner of the circle.
  • Sammy Popper sent the final dagger with the last penalty corner of the match in the final two minutes of play.
Sharing The Wealth
  • Maryland points came from both veterans and newcomers. Lawn takes three from the equalizer goal and Bradford earns one for the assist.
  • Returner Paige Kieft tallied two saves and freshman Alyssa Klebasko earned her first career save on a penalty corner.
  • Veteran Hope Rose scored two goals in the match, while Margot Lawn earned her second assist on the year.
  • Sammy Popper added her second goal of the season in the final minutes of play with an assist from veteran Nathalie Fiechter.
Series Success
  • With the win, Maryland remains undefeated against Cal with a 13-0-0 all-time advantage.
Notable Numbers
  • 4: Number of goals the Terps have scored in each of their first two games.
  • 12: Total corners awarded throughout the game.
Up Next
  • The Terps wrap up their California road trip with a Monday matinee against UC Davis at 6 pm ET.
