COLLEGE PARK, MD - No. 8 Maryland field hockey returns to action for a road match against No. 6 Rutgers. Thursday's matchup will begin conference play for the Terrapins.

series history

Competition with these two squads dates back to 1978. The Terps hold a 35-4-1 all-time series lead over the Scarlet Knights.
These two programs became conference foes when Maryland joined the Big Ten in 2014. Since then, the Terps have tallied ten wins and only one loss.
Maryland leads the Scarlet Knights in Piscataway with a 11-4 program record. Rutgers has never beaten Maryland in College Park.
The last time these programs met was during the 2022 regular season. The Terps earned the 4-3 win at home, clinching the Big Ten regular season title for the sixth time in nine years.

Fifth year Margot Lawn and sophomore Hannah Boss tallied a goal apiece during the match with Virginia. Lawn now leads the team in assists with five. She ranks fifth in the Big Ten averaging .560 assists per game. Boss owns the team's fourth highest point total with seven, from two goals and three assists.
Junior Hope Rose leads the Terps with 19 points from nine goals and one assist. She has tallied 28 shots this year with a shots-on-goal percentage of .821. Rose owns three multi-score games this season, including a hat trick against Miami (OH) during the Terrapin Invitational. She averages one goal per game, locking her in fourth place in the Big Ten and twelfth nationally.
Freshman Maci Bradford continues to make her presence known on the pitch. She owns the second highest point total with 12 , from four goals and four assists, after a career-high two-goal game against Princeton.
The Terps continue to showcase depth through their roster as they average sixteen players participating per match. Ten players have at least two points on the year, including nine goal scorers.
Junior Paige Kieft and freshman Alyssa Klebasko continue to split time in the cage, as both goalkeepers have contributed to the teams three shutouts and two wins over ranked opponents.

Championship coaching

Missy Meharg returns for her 36th season as head coach. A nine-time National Coach of the Year recipient, Meharg brings an unprecedented level of consistency and excellence to the Maryland field hockey program.
Meharg became the third coach in Division I history to reach 600 wins in 2021. She is not shy of championships as she has led the Terps to seven national titles, including five in seven years, 12 conference tournament crowns, 15 conference regular season titles and 19 appearances in the NCAA Semifinals round, including 12 in the NCAA Finals.
She is supported by associate head coach Scott Tupper (third season), assistant coach Kasey Tapman Asper (third season) and goalie specialist Natalie Hunter Cyrus (first season).
