COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland football was defeated by Northwestern, 37-10, on Oct. 11 at SECU Stadium. The Terps are 3-3 overall and 0-3 in Big Ten play.

The Terps fell behind 17-0 early in the second quarter before rallying within one score in the second half at 17-10. On an early fourth-quarter drive, they had the chance to tie the game, but a strip sack resulted in a touchdown for the Wildcats, increasing their lead to 24-10.

Billy Edwards Jr. finished the game with 296 passing yards and a rushing touchdown. His rushing TD in the second quarter was the 11th of his career and his eighth from the one-yard line.

Tai Felton (nine receptions for 77 yards), Kaden Prather (eight receptions for 81 yards) and Preston Howard (five receptions for 59 yards) were Edward's top targets. Felton entered the top 10 in program history for career receiving yards and receptions. He surpassed Marcus Badgett (1989-92) for 10th in yards and now has 1792 for his career. He surpassed Dontay Demus Jr. (2018-22) and Levern Jacobs (2012-16) in receptions and now sits in ninth place with 131 career grabs.

Caleb Wheatland and Kellan Wyatt each recorded sacks. Kevis Thomas led the Terps with a career-high four total tackles. Ruben Hyppolite II added three total tackles, a tackle for loss and a pass breakup.

Northwestern improved to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in conference action.

Locksley's Take
"There were some things, as I always try to tell you, there are some things that I thought were positive about the game that we can build on, but there's also a lot of places that there's still some work to be done," head coach Michael Locksley said. "There's no one's going to be tougher, or nobody can be tougher on us than we will be on ourselves and what I will be on myself."

Breaking Down The Action

  • The Terps fumbled on the ensuing kickoff but held Northwestern's offense to a 43-yard field goal. At 10:50 in the second, they trailed 17-0.
  • A flag for pass interference set the Terps up on the two-yard line, and on a 4th-and-1, Billy Edwards Jr. scored a rushing touchdown on a "tush push" to cut the deficit to 17-7 with 3:22 left in the half.
  • The Terps settled for a field goal from 54 yards out seconds before the half, but it missed wide right. They entered the locker room trailing 17-7.

  • The Terps scored their first touchdown on a 16-play, 90-yard drive. That was the most plays on a scoring drive since a 17-play drive that resulted in a field goal against Towson last season.
  • The last 16-play drive that ended in a touchdown came on a 16-play drive against Howard on September 11, 2021.
