Shaw to Represent United States at Premier12 Tournament

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland baseball alum Matt Shaw was named to the Team USA roster on Monday. Shaw will be one of 28 players to represent the United States at the WBSC Premier12 tournament. 
 
Shaw had one of the all-time great careers in a Maryland uniform. Shaw finished his Terrapins career with a .320 batting average with 53 home runs and 166 RBI. In 2023, Shaw received multiple honors to close out his Terps career. Shaw was named the Brooks Wallace Award winner, which is given annually to the best shortstop in collegiate baseball. Shaw finished his 2023 campaign with a .341 average with 20 doubles, 24 home runs, and 69 RBI. Shaw was a consensus first team all-American in 2023, while also being named Big Ten Player of the Year. Shaw was a two-time First Team All-Big Ten selection, and was named a 2021 Freshman All-American


Shaw split time in the minors between Double-A and Triple-A this season in the Chicago Cubs organization. Shaw finished the season with a .284 average with 21 home runs, 71 RBI and 31 stolen bases across the two levels. Shaw was named the Southern League Most Valuable Player and was one of just four players to have a 20-30 season in all of minor league baseball. Shaw was selected with the 13th overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, becoming the highest draft pick in Maryland baseball program history.

The Premier12 Tournament will begin on November 9. Team USA is a part of Group A, which will begin play in Guadalajara and Tepic, Mexico November 9-14. The top two teams from the six-team group will advance to the Super Round in Tokyo, Japan November 21-24. The tournament features the world's 12 top-ranked teams in the international competition.
