COLLEGE PARK, MD – In a game that featured five lead changes, Maryland football was defeated by Rutgers, 31-17, on Saturday at SECU Stadium. The Terps are now 4-6 overall and 1-6 in Big Ten play.

A six-yard touchdown rush by Kyle Monangai gave the Scarlet Knights (6-4, 3-4) a 21-17 lead at 5:14 in the third quarter. They followed with another touchdown and a field goal, making it 17 unanswered points to capture the victory.

Senior wide receiver Tai Felton shattered Maryland football's program record for single-season receptions set by DJ Moore. Felton entered the contest tied with Moore for the record, who had 80 catches in 2017. He finished with a receiving line of six catches for 61 yards and a touchdown. Felton now has 86 catches on the year and even became just the fourth player in program history to eclipse 1,000 receiving yards in a single season.

The senior wide receiver has 1,040 yards in 2024, leading the Big Ten in both receptions and receiving by a significant margin. His touchdown in the second quarter was the 15th of his career, moving him into fifth place in program history for career TDs.

Roman Hemby finished with 146 all-purpose yards (87 rushing and 59 receiving). He scored his 22nd touchdown on the ground in the third quarter, which was his 27th overall score overall, tying him for fourth in program history.

Dylan Wade was Maryland's leading receiver with a career-high seven receptions for 92 yards. Kaden Prather added five catches for 76 yards. Billy Edwards Jr. completed 32 passes for 335 yards for his fourth 300-yard passing game.

This was the 11th straight season Maryland and Rutgers have played each other. Maryland showed its appreciation to those who served or are currently serving. The game was a part of Military Appreciation Day.

Locksley's Take
"Credit coach Schiano, his team," head coach michael Locksley said. "Job well done. As I kind of replay this thing, the thing that jumps out to me is that there were a lot of plays we left out there on the field, at least on offense and defense. We had some explosives that we didn't hit on early that we need to be able to make. And then on defense, when we had some opportunities to get off the field, we couldn't get off the field."

Breaking Down The Action

The Terps forced a Scarlet Knights three-and-out and missed a 44-yard field goal after driving down the field. Tai Felton caught a 17-yard pass on fourth down to keep the chains moving. The catch broke DJ Moore's 2017 single-season reception record.
Tommy Akingbesote recorded a tackle for loss on Rutgers' second drive, later forcing it to punt. The ensuing offensive drive by Maryland ended with a season-long 48-yard field goal by Jack Howes. The Terps took a 3-0 lead at 2:06 in the first.
Rutgers took a 7-3 lead after Athan Kaliakmanis found Ian Strong for a 12-yard score at 8:21 in the second frame.
Maryland responded with a touchdown to lead 10-7 at 4:37. Billy Edwards Jr. connected with Felton for a 12-yard score to cap off an 8-play, 75-yard drive.
Kyle Monangai rushed for a two-yard score as Rutgers regained its lead at 14-10 with 1:01 remaining in the half.
The Terps scored on their first possession out of the locker room. They went 8-plays, 75 yards, and Roman Hemby plunged for a two-yard score. They led 17-14.
Monangai reached the end zone a second time at 5:14 in the third. Rutgers once again took back the lead, 21-17.
The Scarlet Knights added another score to lead 28-17 as Kaliakmanis connected with Dymere Miller at 14:55 in the fourth.

Terrific Tai

Tai Felton finished his day with a stat line of six receptions for 61 yards and a TD. Through 10 games, he has 86 receptions for 1,040 receiving yards and seven TDs.
The receiver broke DJ Moore's 2017 single-season program record for receptions (80). He entered the contest tied and quickly surpassed his mark with his first catch of the game at 12:12 in the first quarter.
Felton became the fourth wide receiver in program history to eclipse 1,000 receiving yards in a single season. He accomplished the feat with his 12-yard TD catch at 4:37 in the second quarter.
His touchdown in the second quarter gave him 15 career TDs, allowing him to earn sole possession of fifth place in program history for career-receiving touchdowns. He broke a tie with Jeshaun Jones (2018-23), Dontay Demus Jr. (2018-22) and Stefon Diggs (2012-14). Fourth on the List is DJ Moore (2015-17), with 17 career scores.
He moved to fourth in program history for career receiving yards with 2,123. He passed Darrius Heyward-Bey, who totaled 2,089 from 2006-08.
Felton is also third in program history for career receptions with 162. Next on the list at second is Geroy Simon, who corralled 185 balls from 1993-96.
Felton ranks first in the Big Ten in yards and receptions by a large margin.

The Roman Empire

Roman Hemby rushed 17 times for 87 yards and a touchdown in the game. He added five receptions for 59 yards through the air.
His rushing touchdown at 11:16 in the third quarter was his sixth of the season. It was the 22nd of his career on the ground, ranking eighth in program history. Next on the list with 25 are C.J. Brown (2011-14) and Louis Carter (1972-74).
The score also gave him 27 career touchdowns (rushing and receiving), tying him for fourth in program history with Louis Carter (1972-74).
Hemby ranks 12th on the career-rushing leaderboard. With 2,264 yards, he's nearing Louis Carter (1972-74) at 11th with 2,266 yards.

Honoring The Champs

The Terps honored the 1974 and 1984 ACC championship teams on the field during a first-half timeout.
Other former Terps at the game included NFL Pro Bowlers Shawne Merriman and Torrey Smith, Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Rakim Jarrett, Minnesota Vikings rookie Jeshaun Jones and former Terps standout Dontay Demus Jr.
