Felton Scores Two Touchdowns In Loss To Hawkeyes On Senior Day

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland football was defeated by Iowa, 29-13, on Senior Day, Saturday, at SECU Stadium. The Terps are now 4-7 overall and 1-7 in Big Ten play. 

The Hawkeyes opened the game with 16 unanswered points. The Terps got on the board with two touchdowns by Tai Felton at 6:07 in the third and 11:05 in the fourth, but Iowa closed out the game with a rushing score and two timely interceptions. 

Felton now has a team-leading nine receiving touchdowns this season and 17 for his career. He now ranks tied for second in program history for single-season touchdowns and tied for fourth in career touchdowns. He finished with six catches for 57 yards.  Maryland utilized quarterbacks Billy Edwards Jr. and MJ Morris. Morris led the Terps with 12 completions for 103 yards and two passing touchdowns. Nolan Ray carried the load on the ground, racking up 48 yards on four carries. Roman Hemby added five receptions for 31 yards through the air. 

Dante Trader Jr. (10), Donnell Brown (nine) and Ruben Hyppolite II (eight) led Maryland's defense in tackles. 

Iowa improved to 7-4 overall and 5-3 in conference action. Kaleb Johnson (164 yards) and Kamari Moulton (114 yards) led the Hawkeyes' rushing attack, each scoring touchdowns. 

Maryland honored 22 seniors ahead of the game. It closes the regular season at No. 4 Penn State on Nov. 30.

Locksley's Take
"Tough loss, particularly for our seniors," head coach Michael Locksley said. "And to me, that's what I'm gonna make this about because this group is a group of guys that made a decision to come here before we started winning, made a decision to come here sight unseen because most of them were COVID kids. This is a group that has left a runway for the next few years, that I promise you will be what we expect them to be."

Breaking Down The Action
  • Iowa drove down the field, but Caleb Wheatland recorded a sack for a 10-yard loss, and Jalen Huskey recovered a fumble on the next down. The Terps took over on their own 10-yard line at 8:42. 
  • The Hawkeyes got on the board first with a 27-yard field goal with 22 seconds to go in the first. 
  • Iowa took a 10-0 lead at 6:29 in the second quarter after Kaleb Johnson rushed for a two-yard TD. 
  • The Hawkeyes added a pair of field goals: one with 1:01 left in the half, a 54-yard field goal, and another at 11:05 in the third. They led 16-0. 
  • The Terps earned their first red-zone trip of the afternoon and converted it into a touchdown. MJ Morris found Tai Felton for an eight-yard TD to cap off an 11-play, 70-yard drive. They trailed the Hawkeyes 16-6 at 5:08 in the third. 
  • Iowa got back in the scoring column with a 49-yarder to take a 19-6 lead. 
  • Felton scored a second TD at 11:05 in the fourth. The score brought the Terps within six at 19-13.
  • Kamari Moulton scored a 68-yard rushing touchdown to keep Iowa in front at 9:19. It also added another field goal to lead 29-13. 
Terrific Tai  
  • Tai Felton finished his day with a stat line of six receptions for 57 yards. Through 11 games, he has 92 receptions for 1,097 receiving yards and eighth TDs. 
  • The receiver's 92 catches are a single-season program record. He broke DJ Moore's 2017 mark (80) last week against Rutgers. His 1,097 yards rank second in program history. He passed Torrey Smith's 2010 mark (1,055). Marcus Badgett owns the record with 1,240 yards in 1992. 
  • His touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters gave him 17 career TDs, ranking tied for fourth in program history. He tied DJ Moore (2015-17). It also tied him for second in program history for single-season receiving scores. He's tied with Jermaine Lewis and Marcus Badgett.  
  • He's fourth in program history for career receiving yards with 2,180. Third place is Torrey Smith, who recorded 2,215 yards from 2008-10. 
  • Felton is also third in program history for career receptions with 168. Next on the list at second is Geroy Simon, who corralled 185 balls from 1993-96.
  • Felton ranks first in the Big Ten in yards and receptions by a large margin. 
Honoring The Seniors  Numbers And Nuggets 
  • 4: Caleb Wheatland leads the team with four sacks. 
  • 4: Dante Trader Jr. recorded his fourth career game with 10 or more tackles. 
  • 7: The Terps recovered their seventh fumble of the season. 
  • 9: Tai Felton leads the team with nine touchdowns in 2024. 
  • 16: Bryce McFerson has 16 punts of 50 or more yards this season. 
  • 17: Felton has 17 touchdowns in his career. 
  • 22: Maryland honored 22 seniors for Senior Day. 
  • 25: Hemby has recorded a reception in 25 straight games dating back to December of 2022, the second-longest active streak by an FBS RB. This is the longest such streak by any Maryland running back this century.
  • 92: Felton has 92 receptions this season, which is a Maryland single-season record.
