No. 10 Terps Fall To No. 1 Buckeyes In Regular Season Finale, 2-1

COLLEGE PARK, MD –  No. 10 Maryland men's soccer was defeated by No. 1 Ohio State, 2-1, in its 2024 regular-season finale at Ludwig Field on Sunday. The Terps are now 8-4-5 overall and 5-3-2 in Big Ten play.  

With the loss, the Terps are the No. 3 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and will play No. 6 seed UCLA in the quarterfinals in their next match. All quarterfinal and semifinal matches will be held at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois. The Terps will play on Nov. 7 at 3:30 p.m. ET, airing on Big Ten Plus. 

Trailing 2-0, Luca Costabile got the Terps on the board five minutes into the second half. It was the junior's first career goal and was unassisted. The goal also gave Maryland its 11th goal scorer this season, its most since 2022, when it had 15 different scorers. 

  However, the Terps could not score the equalizer in the ensuing defensive battle. Freshman goalkeeper Laurin Mack finished today's game with one save and increased his season total to 41 saves.

Ohio State clinched a share of the Big Ten regular season title and improved to Ohio State 12-1-3 overall and 7-1-2 in conference action. The Buckeyes' goal scorers were Thomas Gilej and Ashton Bilow.

  • Ohio State struck first in the 15th minute off a header to the back of the net.
  • Laurin Mack had a great sequence in the 23rd minute, making a pair of athletic stops on goal.
  • Two minutes later, Mack had a diving save to keep the Buckeyes from adding their second goal of the game.
  • The Buckeyes took a 2-0 lead in the 34th minute.
  • Five minutes into the second half, Luca Costabile scored a goal to the left side of the net, cutting the Ohio State lead to 2-1.
  • Maryland nearly tied the game with a sequence in the 57th minute that had multiple shot attempts from within the box that was blocked.
  • Ohio State nearly scored the game-sealing goal on a breakaway in the 81st minute, but Mack came out of the box to help force the shot high.
