Terps Dominate Coppin State In 2024-25 Home Opener, 70-47

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland women's basketball dominated Coppin State, winning 70-47 in the in-state matchup at XFINITY Center on Thursday's 2024-25 home season opener.   

The Terps (2-0) pulled ahead with a
23-1 run in the second quarter, which began at 7:31 and lasted until the end of the half. They entered the locker room, leading 40-16, and continued building their lead. 

Kaylene Smikle led all scorers with
20 points on 7-of-12 shooting, recording her first game as a Terp scoring in double figures. She added three rebounds and two steals.  

Sarah Te-Biasu added 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from beyond the arch. Mir McLean (7), Bri McDaniel (7), Shyanne Sellers (6), Saylor Poffenbarger (6) and Amari DeBerry (6) all recorded six or more points. Poffenbarger also recorded 10 rebounds and two assists. 
  The Terrapins forced 17 turnovers and outscored Coppin State off turnovers (18-10) and in bench points (26-11). 

Maryland is now 17-0 in the all-time series against Coppin State. Coppin State faltered to 1-1 on the year.  
  Frese's Take 
"Every game is going to be different," head coach Brenda Frese said. "I think you saw a post presence our last game out, and they did a good job studying film to make us have to shoot it from the perimeter tonight, which we were able to do. Still taking a while to kind of get in our groove with so many players and getting into that game shape we want to be in. But I liked the response in the second quarter."

Breaking Down The Action
  • Kaylene Smikle made each of her first two shots from beyond the 3-point line and added a layup as the Terps led 12-10 at the first media timeout. Smikle led all scorers with eight points. 
  • The Terps went into the second frame with a 15-12 lead, and Smikle had scored 11 of Maryland's points for her first game in a Maryland uniform, scoring in double digits. 
  • Back-to-back threes by Saylor Poffenbarger and Sarah Te-Biasu forced Coppin State's head coach to call a timeout. Maryland led 23-15 with 6:52 in the half. 
  • Maryland gained its first double-digit lead at 5:54 after Bri McDaniel converted a layup. The score was part of a 23-1 run that allowed them to amass a 40-16 halftime lead. 
  • At the third-quarter media timeout, the Terps were amidst a 10-0 run, led by Smikle. She led all scorers with 20 points, and Coppin State was scoreless for over three and a half minutes. 
  • Maryland closed out the game comfortably in the fourth quarter and advanced to 2-0 on the season. 
Double-Figure Factors
  • Kaylene Smikle netted 20 points for her 39th career game in double figures. It was her first game netting double-digit points as a Terps after transferring from Rutgers. 
  • Sarah Te-Biasu scored 12 points. It was her 81st game scoring in double digits. It was her first game scoring in double-figures as a Terp after transferring from VCU. 
Sellers On The Charts 
  • Shyanne Sellers is 31st on the program's all-time scoring list, with 1249. She's nearing Belinda Pearman (1981-84), who scored 1,284. 
  • The point guard also moved up to 14th on the all-time assists list with 403. She passed former Marcia Richardson (1982-84) and is nearing 13th place Subrena Rivers (1986-90) with 406. 
Home Sweet Home 
  • Maryland has been a dominant home team, especially over the last decade. The Terps are 608-142 all-time in College Park, dating back to the inaugural 1971-72 season.
  • Maryland is 314-47 at home under Brenda Frese, whose first season in College Park was the inaugural season of XFINITY Center. 
  • The Terrapins are 173-12 all-time in non-conference games in XFINITY Center.
