No. 8 Maryland to Welcome Rutgers Thursday

COLLEGE PARK, MD --  The No. 8-ranked Maryland women's basketball team (12-0, 2-0 B1G) will host Rutgers (8-5, 0-2) Thursday, Jan. 2 in a 7 p.m. game at the XFINITY Center. For tickets, click here. Parking is free in lots 9B, 4B, 11B and the Terrapin Trail Garage after 4 p.m. Thursday. 

Thursday's game will be streamed on B1G+. Thursday's game is also the Terrapins' LGBTQ+ Pride Night.

 

2024-25 STORYLINES

What's UP
  • Maryland is coming off a hardfought 72-66 win over No. 19 Michigan State Sunday. Kaylene Smikle scored 19 points. Saylor Poffenbarger scored 14 with 10 rebounds. Bri McDaniel added 12 and Shyanne Sellers scored 11. Christina Dalce grabbed 11 rebounds.
  • Maryland is 12-0 for the first time since it went 12-0 to start the 2018-19 season. The Terrapins went 16-0 to start the 2011-12 and 1982-83 seasons. The Terps' best start in school history was when they started 18-0 in 2006-07. The Terps are one of eight teams in the country that have not lost.
  • Kaylene Smikle has scored in double figures in 11 straight games and Shyanne Sellers has scored in double figures in eight straight.

  • Maryland is currently No. 8 in the country in field goal percentage (49.3%) and No. 4 in rebounding margin (+16.4). The Terps are No. 12 nationally in scoring (85.0).
  • Shyanne Sellers is No. 6 in the Big Ten in assist/turnover ratio (2.2) and No. 2 in assists (5.6). Saylor Poffenbarger is No. 15 in the country and No. 3 in the Big Ten in defensive rebounds (7.5). Christina Dalce is No. 24 in the nation and No. 4 in the league in offensive rebounds (4.1).
  • Maryland women's basketball is in its 54th season and owns a record of 1,137-463 (.710). The Terrapins are No. 11 all-time in NCAA Division I history in winning percentage and No. 9 in all-time victories. 
  • Maryland was picked to finish fourth in the 18-team Big Ten Conference by both the league's head coaches and media panel. The Terrapins were behind just USC, UCLA and Ohio State and Indiana was picked to finish fifth.
  • The Terrapins are ranked No. 8 in the Associated Press poll released Dec. 30 and No. 7 in the USA Today Coaches poll released Dec. 31.
  • Two-time National Coach of the Year Brenda Frese brings in 10 new players, including seven transfers, to the squad this season. The Terrapins welcome Big East Co-Defensive Player of the Year Christina Dalce, Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Sarah Te-Biasu, All-Big Ten First Team honoree Kaylene Smikle, All-SEC Freshman Team honoree Saylor Poffenbarger, as well as Mir McLean, Amari DeBerry and Isimenme Ozzy-Momodu
  • Maryland also welcomes three freshmen in Ava McKennie, Kyndal Walker and Breanna Williams. All three won championships in high school. 
  • The Terrapins return All-Big Ten honorees Shyanne Sellers and Bri McDaniel, as well as Emily Fisher, Emma Chardon and Allie Kubek for the 2024-25 season. 
  • Sellers was named to the 10-player All-Big Ten Preseason Team for the second straight season. Sellers earned All-Big Ten First Team honors last year after averaging 15.6 points, 5.8 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game. 
  • Sellers was named to the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Watch List for the nation's top shooting guard. Poffenbarger was named to the Cheryl Miller Award Watch List for the nation's top small forward.

  • Kaylene Smikle has scored in double figures in 11 straight games and Shyanne Sellers has scored in double figures in eight straight.
  • Maryland has won the rebounding battle in all 12 games this season.
  • Maryland is 12-0 for the first time since it went 12-0 to start the 2018-19 season. The Terrapins went 16-0 to start the 2011-12 and 1982-83 seasons. Frese File
  • Head coach Brenda Frese is in her 23rd season in College Park. She's led the Terrapins to a record of 594-161 (.787), 14 conference titles, 20 NCAA Tournament bids in 22 postseasons, three Final Fours, seven Elite Eights, 11 Sweet Sixteens and the 2006 NCAA Championship. 
  • Frese owns a career record of 651-191 (.773) over her 26 years as a head coach.
  • Frese was named National Coach of the Year by the AP, The Athletic and ESPN at the end of the 2020-21 season. In October 2021, Frese was the first woman inducted into the Washington DC Metro Basketball Hall of Fame.
  • With the Terrapins' win at Nebraska on Feb. 14, 2021, Frese picked up win No. 500 at Maryland, which makes her the winningest coach in Maryland basketball history. Hall of Fame women's basketball head coach Chris Weller won 499 games in her 27 seasons (1975-02).
