Terps Continue Late-Season Push, Beat Wisconsin, 79-63

Box Score COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland women's basketball dominated Wisconsin, 79-63, on Thursday at XFINITY Center in its final home game of the season. The Terps have won five out of their last six games as they continue their end-of-season NCAA tournament push.  

Maryland (17-11, 9-8 B1G) led by 20 points at halftime, but Wisconsin battled to trail by only six points early in the fourth quarter. However, the Terps held on by igniting a 13-2 run to regain control. The Terrapins also had a strong night shooting beyond the three-point line to propel it to victory. The Terps shot 7-for-15 from three and Brinae Alexander knocked down three on her own.  

Four Terps scored in double-figures with Jakia Brown-Turner scoring a game-high 18 points. She also finished with a double-double with 10 rebounds. It was her 13th straight game scoring in double figures and her fifth double-double of the season.  

  Bri McDaniel scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds.   
Shyanne Sellers notched 16 points, five assists and three steals for another all-around performance. 

  Wisconsin (13-14, 6-11 B1G) had three players score in double-figures. Serah Williams posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. 

The Terps are a perfect 13-0 against the Badgers in their program history.

  Breaking Down The Action
  • Bri McDaniel and Brinae Alexander knocked down three-pointers to key a 10-0 Maryland run at the first media timeout. The Terps enjoyed a 12-2 lead with their hot start. Maryland led 17-8 at the end of the first quarter.  
  • The Terps went on another run, this time a 14-2 run, in the second quarter. Maryland was also efficient shooting the basketball as it was 5-for-10 from beyond the arch with four minutes remaining in the quarter. 
  • The Terrapins entered halftime with a 39-19 lead. McDaniel had a game-high 12 points. 
  • Wisconsin cut into the deficit as it trailed 42-29 while Maryland hadn't scored from the floor in four minutes. The Badgers made it an eight-point game after outsourcing the Terps 25-13 in the third quarter. Maryland still led 52-44. 
  • Wisconsin trailed by as little as six points, but Alexander drilled a three to put the lead back to 17 points. 
  • Maryland used a 13-2 spurt in the early fourth quarter to regain a 17-point lead at 67-50 on an Alexander triple with 4:51 left in the game.

I loved our intensity from the tip, 13 turnovers in the first half, and making Wisconsin have to work for everything," said head coach Brenda Frese. "This was a special one to finish at home here with a win. ...It's been a really good month winning five of the last six."

"I didn't really soak it in and when the game ended I was just so grateful that I was able to come back home and was able to come here and my teammates support me. It's just been a fun journey. Time moves fast and I enjoyed every moment of it.

Double-Figure Factors
  • ​​Jakia Brown-Turner hit the double-figures mark for the 20th time this season, her first with the Terps, scoring 18 points. Overall, she has 86 double-figure scoring games in her career with 67 coming at NC State. Brown-Turner has scored in double-figures in each of her last 13 games.
  • Bri McDaniel tallied 16 points for her 17th game this season and 19th of her career in double-figures.
  • Shyanne Sellers scored 16 points and has scored double-figures in 21 of 27 games she has played this season. It was also the 62nd in her career scoring in double-figures.
  • Allie Kubek scored in double-figures for the 12th time this season with 11 points. She scored 10-plus points in 45 career games with 33 coming at Towson before transferring to Maryland. 
Records & Milestones 
  • Maryland has four 1,000-point scorers on its roster. (Brown-Turner - 1,643; Briggs - 1,396, Alexander - 1,398; Sellers - 1,148).
  • Sellers moved into the No. 34 spot for all-time scorers in Maryland's program history. She passed Pam Reaves (1979-81) and is now 15 points Renneika Razor (2000-03). 
  • Sellers also moved up to No. 20 on the all-time assists list with 365. She passed Vicki Brick (2000, 02-04) and is now seven away from passing Sonia Chase (1995-98). 
  • With three three-pointers in the game, Alexander has made 137 in her two years as a Terrapin which is No. 12 in program history. Next on the list is Laurin Mincy (2011-15) who made 143 in her career. 
Home Sweet Home 
  • Maryland has been a dominant home team, especially over the last decade. The Terps are 607-142 all-time in College Park, dating back to the inaugural 1971-72 season.
  • Maryland is 313-47 at home under Brenda Frese, whose first season in College Park was the inaugural season of XFINITY Center. 
Terps In The Big Ten
  • The Terps are 208-62 all-time against their Big Ten opponents.
  • Since joining the Big Ten in 2014-15, the Terrapins are 166-32 against their conference opponents, including their 20-4 record in the Big Ten Tournament.
