Well-Balanced Effort Lifts Terps To 67-59 Win At Rutgers

Box Score NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ -- Led by defense and an overall team effort on offense, Maryland women's basketball got back in the win column by defeating Rutgers, 67-59, on Tuesday at Jersey Mike's Arena. Eight different Terps scored in the win, led by Shyanne Sellers' 16 points.
  Maryland (13-10, 5-7 B1G) scored the first seven points to open the second half of play and keyed a 14-6 run over the first six minutes to lead by as many as 18 points. The Scarlet Knights cut the deficit to three points, but Bri McDaniel knocked down two clutch free throws down the stretch to help the Terps hold onto the win.  

The Terps defense shut down the Scarlet Knights offense by swarming to the ball and forcing turnovers. Rutgers committed 22 turnovers with Maryland recording 12 steals throughout. 

Maryland also held a considerable advantage on the boards despite Rutgers' size. It outrebounded Rutgers 47-37. The discrepancy was also evident on the offensive glass where the Terps added a 25-12 edge that led to second-chance points. 

McDaniel hit four late free throws as she scored 14 points and had three steals. In her return to New Jersey, Faith Masonius had an all-around game with six points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists. 
  Jakia Brown-Turner continued her strong play of late by scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. She's averaging 19.3 points and 7.8 rebounds over her last eight games. It was her third double-double of the season. 
  Rutgers (7-18, 1-11 B1G) was led by Destiny Adams's 22 points and eight rebounds.  

Maryland is 33-12 all-time against Rutgers and has won 14 of 15 meetings since joining the Big Ten in the 2014-15.

Breaking Down The Action
  • Maryland led 16-11 after ending the first quarter on an 8-0 run. Six different Terps scored and Jakia Brown-Turner and Brinae Alexander added three-pointers. 
  • The Terps led by nine points three minutes into the second quarter but quickly came back to cut the deficit to two points. The Terrapins locked down defensively down the stretch and went into halftime with a 37-28 lead. Shyanne Sellers and Brown-Turner paced all Maryland scorers with seven and nine points respectively. 
  • Brown-Turner converted an and-one to begin the second half of the game and the Terps their first double-digit lead of the game. Maryland then went on a 14-6 run at the third-quarter media timeout to take a 51-34 lead. 
  • Rutgers responded with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 10 points. However, Maryland entered the fourth quarter with a 54-41 lead. Allie Kubek then converted an and-one at the 7:48 mark of the fourth quarter.
  • The Scarlet Knights notched a timely 10-0 run down the stretch to cut the Maryland lead to three points, 62-59 with two minutes left. 
  • Maryland converted several opportunities at the charity stripe to secure the win.   
Frese's Take
"I thought we were just quicker and a lot more aggressive on the glass, which we need to be, it's been an area we've been talking about," head coach Brenda Frese said "It gave us those extra opportunities especially since they wanted to take the air out of the ball and kind of have less possession in this game."

"I just think that It just showed that were getting better and that were connected and were a great team," Jakia Brown-Turner said. "Just finishing out these wins, playing hard and doing the little things." 

Double-Figure Factors
  • Shyanne Sellers (16 points) has scored double-figures in 17 of 22 games she has played this season and 58 in her career.
  • Bri McDaniel tallied 14 points for her 14th game this season and 16th of her career in double-figures. She has notched double-figures in eight out of her last nine games. 
  • Jakia Brown-Turner hit the double-figures mark for the 15th time this season, her first with the Terps, scoring 11 points. Overall, she has 82 double-figure scoring games in her career with 67 coming at NC State. 
Records & Milestones 
  • With two made three-pointers, Brinae Alexander has made 123 three-pointers in her two years as a Terrapin. She passed Kim Rodgers for No. 14 in Maryland's program history. Next on the list is Ashleigh Newman who made 124 in her career.  
  • Maryland has four 1,000-point scorers on its roster. (Brown-Turner - 1,562; Briggs - 1,375, Alexander - 1,363; Sellers - 1,071).
  • Entering the matchup, Shyanne Sellers' career free throw percentage of 81.5% ranked No. 3 in Maryland history behind just Kristi Toliver (.866) and Laurin Mincy (.817)
  • Entering the matchup, Bri McDaniel's career three-point percentage is 46.2%, which is currently No. 2 in the Maryland record books behind just Katie Benzan (47.4%). Alexander's Maryland career three-point percentage is 42.2%, which is No. 4 in Maryland history Lavender Briggs' three-point percentage in her Maryland career is 38.2%, which is No. 12.
Brown-Turner Continues Hot Streak 
  • Jakia Brown-Turner had her eighth game in a row in double-figures with 11 points.  She had scored 20-plus in her last five games. She's now averaging 19.3 points over those eight games. 
  • With 10 rebounds, she's also averaging 7.8 rebounds over her last eight games and recorded two double-doubles over that stretch.  
  • Brown-Turner recorded 1,500 career points against Penn State on Jan. 28. With 11 points today, she now has 1,562 in her five-year career. 
Dominating The Series 
  • Tuesday's matchup was the 45th all-time between Maryland and Rutgers with the Terps owning the series, 33-12 and having won 14 of 15 meetings since joining the Big Ten in the 2014-15.
  • The Terrapins took both meetings last year - 78-67 in Piscataway on Jan. 2 and 80-56 in College Park on Jan. 15.
  • Brenda Frese is 14-2 vs. Rutgers in her career.
