Terps Push Four Wrestlers Into Day Two Of NCAA Championships

Kansas City, MO – The Terps rebounded from a slow start to the day with a strong showing in Session II, pushing four guys (Braxton Brown, Ethen Miller, Jaxon Smith and Seth Nevills) to day two of the NCAA Championships.

All five Terps came into the night session in the consolation bracket and the Terps came out on top in five matches total.

Maryland is currently 21st in the team standings with 8.5 points. The 8.5 points already mark the highest for a Maryland team at NCAAs since 2019 (13).

Braxton Brown and Ethen Miller both suffered close losses in the final seconds in their first matches of the day but both bounced back with dominant efforts to secure wins by technical fall and punch through to the second day.

Jaxon Smith also rebounded strongly, earning a hard-fought 4-2 decision over No. 27 Luke Surber to extend his run.

Sophomores Brown, Miller and Smith have all made Day Two appearances in both of their NCAA Championships runs.

After coming up just short of a gigantic upset over third-ranked Wyatt Hendrickson, Seth Nevills had to start Session II in the pigtail consolation and he cruised to an 8-0 win over No. 33 Jordan Greer for the first NCAA Championship win of his career. Nevills then used a massive throw to send No. 14 Boone McDermott from his feet to his back and lock up a quick first-period pin to become the fourth Terp to advance.

Kal Miller, the No. 31 seed, was in both his matches against higher-seeded opponents until the final seconds, but was not able to capture a win, bringing his run in Kansas City to a close.

Session III begins tomorrow at noon EST with Session IV at 8 pm EST. Brown, Ethen Miller, Smith and Nevills will all be in action.
