LEXINGTON, KY - Maryland track and field senior javelin thrower Kayla Thorpe has qualified for NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon. She is the first first female javelin thrower in school history to make it to the Championships.
The Upper Darby, PA native, who already was the bronze medalist at Big Ten Outdoor Championships earlier this month, broke her own school javelin record with her throw of 51.95m at the NCAA East First Round, which was good for a sixth-place finish, moving her on to NCAA Championships in two weeks.
Thorpe has had an outstanding senior campaign, becoming the first female Javelin thrower to throw over the 50-meter mark since the new javelin regulations were set in 1983, and has thrown over 50 meters in each of her previous three meets where she has competed in the javelin, including going past 51 meters at the Long Beach Invitational in April.
