PISCATAWAY, NJ – Maryland baseball was defeated by Rutgers, 2-1, in game one of a doubleheader at Bainton Field on Saturday. The Terps and Scarlet Knights are tied in the series at one game apiece.
Maryland is now 30-18 and 9-11 in the Big Ten. Rutgers improved to 26-20 overall and 4-13 in conference play.
The Terps scored the first run of the game in the top of the second, but the Scarlet Knights responded with two runs in the fourth. The remaining four and a half innings were scoreless for both teams. Elijah Lambros drove in Maryland's lone run with a bases-loaded walk.
Evan Smith pitched a career-high 4.1 scoreless innings in relief. The freshman allowed just two hits and struck out three batters on the mound.
Joey McMannis started on the mound and went 3.2 innings with four strikeouts. He allowed just two runs.
Alex Calarco was the only Terp to record multiple hits. He went 2-for-3 with a walk.
