IOWA CITY, IA – No. 10 seed Maryland softball was defeated by No. 2 seed Michigan, 10-0, in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals at Pearl Field on Thursday.

The game remained scoreless until Michigan (38-17), ranked No. 39 in RPI, scored all its runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The game ended after Avery Fantucci hit a grand slam.

Courtney Wyche made her second tournament appearance in two days in the circle. She pitched 4.1 innings and had seven strikeouts, which is a program record for most in a Big Ten Tournament game. With 668 career strikeouts, Wyche now has the third-most in program history. She also has 243 strikeouts on the season, the most in the Big Ten and the sixth-most for a single season in program history.

Jaeda McFarland and Sammi Woods had hits in the contest. McFarland tallies 217 hits in her career, which is the third most in program history.

Head Coach Lauren Karn finished her inaugural season at the helm with a 24-30 record and a Big Ten Tournament win against Penn State. The win on Wednesday was Maryland's second Big Ten Tournament win in program history.

Courtney Wyche struck out seven batters in the game, increasing her career total to 668, which is third all-time. She passed Kerry Hickey (2008-11) and Kendra Knight (2009-12) is second with 790 career strikeouts.
Wyche's 243 strikeouts on the season also rank as the sixth most for a single season in program history. She surpassed Kerry Hickey's 2011 season, in which she struck out 238 batters.
Wyche is also third on the all-time innings pitched list, with 636.2 innings in her career. Next on the list is Amanda Bettker (1999-2002), who threw 657 innings in her career.
Jaeda McFarland is third in program history for career hits. She recorded one in the game and now has 217. Next on the list is Jenny Belak (2005-08), with 219 career hits.
