Q&A with Allie Kubek

UMTERPS.COM SAT DOWN WITH ALLIE KUBEK TO GET TO KNOW HER ON AND OFF THE COURT

What made you start playing basketball?

Allie Kubek: My mom, she really was, like, you really play a sport, or you play an instrument, and I can't do that. So at first I started playing soccer, and then I realized that I wasn't great at soccer, so now I started switching to basketball, and that's when I started to get a little bit good at it. Get a little bit good at it, and just kept, like, staying with it.

Who has been the most influential person in your life?

AK: I would say, pretty much like my family, my mom, my dad, my sister. I think that they're super all hardworking, and each of them have different characteristics that make them, like, unique in a way. My sister's like, super smart, super head driven, and then my dad's kind of shy, but also really hard working. So I think just looking up to them has been like a blessing.

What has been the most memorable experience of your career so far?

AK: I think going to Croatia is pretty memorable. I think it's like, once a lifetime opportunity, and especially the people that, like you love, like friends, coaches and stuff like that. I think it was really nice and fun to see a different country and culture so that was definitely up there.

What are your pre-game rituals?

AK: I just go home and lay down. Really, I just try and get some rest before a game. Listen to music, stuff like that, do my hair.

What's your best piece of advice you've ever received?

AK: I think the best piece I've ever gotten was from one of my AAU coaches, he told me that if I don't mess up, then I'm not going hard enough. I think that really stuck with me, because if I mess up, I'm really hard on myself and  I just always remember if you don't mess up, then you're not learning, you know.

What's your intended major and dream job?

AK: I just graduated with my bachelor's in sociology, and now I'm in my fifth year. I'm doing a graduate degree in entrepreneurship and corporate innovation. I think my dream job would probably be with things like sales, like medical sales, something like that.

What was your favorite part of the Croatia trip?

AK: It was definitely the boat, that was so much fun. Like, you just lay down, listen to music, just like having fun. It was really relaxed and stuff like that. So that was definitely the best part.

If you didn't play basketball, what sport would you play?

AK: I'd play volleyball, and I stand on this, I would be, I would be so good. I played in high school, and I'll never forget one time I had like, 17 kills, and I will stand on the day that I would be so good if I played, that's before my ACL tears, though.

If you brought a friend to Maryland, where would you take them to eat?

AK: Probably, Looney's, maybe just because they have some really good quesadillas.

If you could have dinner with three people dead or alive, who would they be?

AK: Three people dead or alive? Definitely my grandma, who just passed away last year, so I would definitely say her, and then my other grandma passed away a couple years ago. So definitely them too. And I feel like Kobe.

If your sport had a mascot based on you, what would it be?

AK: Probably like a tiger, because a lot of people call me like Alile cat. So, I would say a Tiger.
