No. 14 Maryland Set for Matchup at Penn State

COLLEGE PARK, MD --  The 14th-ranked Maryland women's basketball team (16-4, 6-3 B1G) will play at Penn State (10-11, 1-9) Wednesday at Rec Hall in State College, Pa. The Terrapins and the Lady Lions will tip off at 6 p.m. on B1G+.

  • Kaylene Smikle has scored in double figures in 19 straight games.

  • Shyanne Sellers is currently No. 18 on Maryland's all-time scoring list with 1,486 career points. She needs 27 points to pass Deedee Warley (1,512) at No. 17. Sellers' 481 career assists are No. 7 in the Maryland career record book. She needs 6 to pass Anjale Barrett at No. 6 (486) and 8 to pass Alyssa Thomas at No. 5 (488).
  • Maryland is currently No. 5 in the country in rebounding margin (+11.6) and is No. 4 in the country in free throws made per game (17.70). The Terps are No. 18 nationally in scoring (80.6).
  • Kaylene Smikle is No. 6 in the Big Ten in scoring (17.5). Shyanne Sellers is No. 4 in the Big Ten in assists (4.7). Saylor Poffenbarger is No. 26 in the country and No. 3 in the Big Ten in defensive rebounds (6.9). She is No. 9 in the league in total rebounds (8.4) and Christina Dalce is No. 7 (8.8). Dalce is No. 12 in the nation and No. 2 in the league in offensive rebounds (4.4).

  • Maryland women's basketball is in its 54th season and owns a record of 1,140-468 (.709). The Terrapins are No. 11 all-time in NCAA Division I history in winning percentage and No. 9 in all-time victories. 
  • Maryland was picked to finish fourth in the 18-team Big Ten Conference by both the league's head coaches and media panel. The Terrapins were behind just USC, UCLA and Ohio State and Indiana was picked to finish fifth.

  • Two-time National Coach of the Year Brenda Frese brings in 10 new players, including seven transfers, to the squad this season. The Terrapins welcome Big East Co-Defensive Player of the Year Christina Dalce, Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Sarah Te-Biasu, All-Big Ten First Team honoree Kaylene Smikle, All-SEC Freshman Team honoree Saylor Poffenbarger, as well as Mir McLean, Amari DeBerry and Isimenme Ozzy-Momodu
  • Maryland also welcomes three freshmen in Ava McKennie, Kyndal Walker and Breanna Williams. All three won championships in high school. 
  • Sellers was named to the 10-player All-Big Ten Preseason Team for the second straight season. Sellers earned All-Big Ten First Team honors last year after averaging 15.6 points, 5.8 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game. 
  • Sellers was named to the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Watch List for the nation's top shooting guard. Poffenbarger was named to the Cheryl Miller Award Watch List for the nation's top small forward.

  • Head coach Brenda Frese is in her 23rd season in College Park. She's led the Terrapins to a record of 598-165 (.784), 14 conference titles, 20 NCAA Tournament bids in 22 postseasons, three Final Fours, seven Elite Eights, 11 Sweet Sixteens and the 2006 NCAA Championship. 
  • Frese owns a career record of 655-195 (.771) over her 26 years as a head coach.
  • Frese was named National Coach of the Year by the AP, The Athletic and ESPN at the end of the 2020-21 season. In October 2021, Frese was the first woman inducted into the Washington DC Metro Basketball Hall of Fame.
  • With the Terrapins' win at Nebraska on Feb. 14, 2021, Frese picked up win No. 500 at Maryland, which makes her the winningest coach in Maryland basketball history. Hall of Fame women's basketball head coach Chris Weller won 499 games in her 27 seasons (1975-02).
