Maryland Athletics Announces Establishment Of Johnny Holliday Endowed Scholarship

COLLEGE PARK, MD - In honor of Johnny Holliday's birthday on Oct. 15, Maryland Athletics and the Terrapin Club are pleased to announce the establishment of the Johnny Holliday Endowed Scholarship to honor and celebrate the decorated play-by-play voice of the Maryland Terrapins.

Earlier this year, an anonymous donor contributed a six-figure commitment to establish the scholarship that is intended to support a student-athlete majoring in Communication or Journalism.

"We hope everyone will join this anonymous donor's intent and celebrate Johnny's birthday by making a gift in honor of the legend Johnny Holliday," said Kirby Mills, Senior Associate Athletic Director/Chief Development Officer of Maryland Athletics. "Recognizing someone by establishing a scholarship in their name - be it a community icon like Johnny or a loved one - is a meaningful and personal tribute and we are grateful for the opportunity to celebrate Johnny in this way. These types of investments shape not only today's success but also tomorrow's enduring tradition of achievement and pride."

Holliday, who is celebrating his 88th birthday, is in his 47th year of broadcasting Maryland football this season. Johnny has broadcast more than 1,600 Maryland football and basketball games over his career, including 16 bowl games, 13 Sweet 16s, two Final Fours and Maryland's 2002 Men's Basketball National Championship. Holliday is the eighth-longest tenured broadcaster in the country for NCAA Football and Basketball and the second-longest serving play-by-play man in the Big Ten behind Indiana's Don Fischer.

Holliday has received a plethora of honors throughout his career, including the Chris Schenkel Award presented by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, the All-American Football Foundation Lindsey Nelson Outstanding Sportscaster Award, the Woody Durham Voice of College Sports Award and is in the Washington, D.C. Sports Hall of Fame and Radio-Television Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

The ability to consistently invest in areas of need while providing flexible spending options drastically impacts the overall performance of Maryland Athletics, its teams, and the student-athlete experience. With enhanced resources, Maryland Athletics is able to sustain its 20 programs and directly impact the Terps' ability to compete for championships in the Big Ten and nationally.
