SPRINGFIELD, MA -- Senior Yarden Garzon of the 10th-ranked Maryland women's basketball team was named to the Cheryl Miller Award Watch List Wednesday by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
The Cheryl Miller Award, in its ninth year, honors the top small forwards in women's Division I women's college basketball. It is named after the three-time Naismith Player of the Year and Class of 1995 Hall of Famer.
Garzon is a Preseason All-Big Ten honoree. Garzon comes to College Park after playing three seasons at Indiana, where she earned All-Big Ten Second Team honors. Garzon averaged 14.4 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists per game last year as the Hoosiers' leading scorer. She led the Big Ten in three-pointers made (88) and was second in the league in three-point percentage (40.7%). At Indiana, she was the program's all-time leader in three pointers made (220) and three point percentage (42.6%) in three years.
The Terrapins were predicted to finish No. 2 in the Big Ten, behind just UCLA.
Maryland returns All-Big Ten honorees Kaylene Smikle, Bri McDaniel and starter Saylor Poffenbarger.
Head coach Brenda Frese and her staff signed two transfers in Garzon and 2025 ACC Tournament Most Outstanding Player Oluchi Okananwa (Duke). The Terrapins also welcome freshmen Lea Bartelme, Addi Mack, Rainey Welson, Nicole Fritea and Marya Boiko to the roster.
The Terrapins will host Division II Point Park Thursday at 6 p.m. at the XFINITY Center. Admission is free and the game will be streamed on B1G+.
Maryland will officially open the season Monday, Nov. 3 with a 7 p.m. matchup vs. Loyola (Md.) at the XFINITY Center. Tickets for Monday's game are available here and it will be streamed on B1G+.
