Maryland Falls To No. 2 Indiana

The Terps dropped their Homecoming contest to the Hoosiers despite Malik Washington’s 242 passing yards.

COLLEGE PARK, MD — Maryland (4-4, 1-4 Big Ten) fell 55-10 to No. 2 Indiana (9-0, 6-0 Big Ten) before a sold-out SECU Stadium in the Terps' Homecoming contest.

As it's done all season, the Maryland defense provided an early spark. Jamare Glasker became the first Terp since 2014 (Will Likely III) to record an interception in three straight games within a single season as he picked off Fernando Mendoza on the game's opening drive to set up a Maryland field goal.  After facing a 20-3 halftime deficit, the Terps opened the second half with a dominant four-play, 75-yard drive. Malik Washington hit DeJuan Williams on a beautiful pass for a 55-yard score as the Terps scored their first touchdown of the afternoon. Washington finished with 242 passing yards to become just the third true freshman Power Conference quarterback since 2000 to start his career with eight straight performances of at least 200 passing yards. Williams led the Terps with four receptions for 78 yards.

How it Happened:
1st Quarter:
  • The Terps won the toss and deferred, sending the Hoosiers on offense first.
  • Glasker picked off Mendoza and returned it to the IU 12-yard line on the Hoosiers' first drive of the game.
  • Sean O'Haire hit a 24-yard field goal to put Maryland ahead 3-0.
  • A sack by Sidney Stewart and Eyan Thomas picked up a sack as the Terps pushed IU back and set up a punt that gave UMD the ball on the Hoosiers' 45-yard line.
  • The Hoosiers took a 7-3 lead with a Mendoza draw on 3rd-and-goal.
  • Washington hit Jalil Farooq for a gain of 21 yards as the Terps picked up their first 1st down of the afternoon.
  • Washington connected with Kaleb Webb for a 25-yard gain on 3rd-and-9 on the final play of the opening quarter.
2nd Quarter:
  • The Hoosiers picked off Washington to stem a promising Maryland drive.
  • Indiana took a 10-3 lead with a 20-yard field goal early in the second quarter.
  • Washington was picked off on an impressive defensive effort by IU's Louis Moore.
  • The Hoosiers connected on a 22-yard passing touchdown to extend their lead.
  • Octavian Smith Jr. moved the chains with a 12-yard reception to start the ensuing Maryland drive.
  • A 46-yard field goal moved the IU lead to 20-3 in the final minute of the half.
3rd Quarter:
  • A 3rd-down connection with Williams picked up 16 yards and a 1st down.
  • Washington hit Williams again on the next play for a 55-yard touchdown pass as Maryland found the end zone for the first time.
  • Indiana responded with a 31-yard touchdown run to extend its advantage over the Terps.
  • The Hoosiers forced Maryland fumbles on consecutive drives.
  • Indiana took a 41-10 lead into the final quarter.
4th Quarter:
  • The Hoosiers scored on a 4th-and-2 completion.
  • Indiana punched in the final touchdown of the game with 3:08 remaining in the contest.
Washington's Freshman Season:
  • Washington has thrown for 200+ yards in each of his first eight starts. He matched David Piland of Houston in 2010 and Jaron-Keawe Sagapotele of Cal this season for the most consecutive 200+ yard passing performances to start a career among Power Conference True Freshmen quarterbacks this century.
  • Washington's 1,958 passing yards through eight games are tied for the second-most by a Power Conference true freshman quarterback since 2020. UVA's Anthony Colandrea also had 1,958 in 2023 and Cal's Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele had 1,982 this year.
  • With 176 completions through eight games, Washington ranks third amongst true freshmen Power Conference quarterbacks through eight career games since 2018 (Mississippi State's Will Rogers had 220 in 2020 and Texas Tech's Alan Bowman had 227 in 2018).
  • Washington threw a passing touchdown on Saturday to boost his season total to 12, which is tied for third-most by a true freshman Power Conference quarterback through eight career games since 2020. Oklahoma's Caleb Williams had 14 in 2021, UVA's Colandrea had 13 in 2023 and Miami's Tyler Van Dyke had 12 in 2020-21.
Numbers to Know:
  • 2: Each of the Terps' first two offensive drives started in Indiana territory.
  • 3: Glasker became the first Terp with an interception in three straight games since 2014.
  • 7: Stewart has recorded at least half a sack in seven of his eight games this season.
  • 14: The Terps have only allowed 14 points in the first quarter of conference games this season.
  • 15: Maryland's 15 interceptions are the most by an FBS team this season.
  • 55: The 55-yard touchdown was both Williams' longest reception of his career and Washington's second-longest passing touchdown of the season.
Michael Locksley's Talking Points:
  • "I thought we had opportunities early in the game."
  • "I think if we could create a little more balance on offense to score points, that changes the momentum and changes the energy."
  • "The second-half drive by Malik gave us a bit of life."
  • "We have to figure out what we need to do to get the run game going on offense."
  • "We can't hang our heads. We've got a big game next week on the road."
  • "This team will continue to fight."
Washington's Lessons:
  • "We just couldn't find consistency."
  • "We're learning how to deal with losses and how to be able to come back from it and come back stronger."
  • "All you can do is take it play by play. You can't relive pass plays or turnovers or not. You've just got to look at the next play."
Cam Rice's Message:
  • "We turn to each other. We play hard for each other at the end of the day."
  • "A lot of guys are upset and disappointed, but nobody's pointing a finger and nobody's pointing blame. We all know that we've all got to get better at what we do and just keep pushing to be better."
Up Next:
  • The Terps head to New Jersey to take on Rutgers on Nov. 8. The game will start at 2:30 PM and air on FS1.
