Terps Fall to No. 24 Penn State In Three Sets

Maryland dropped its final road match of the season to a ranked Nittany Lions squad.

STATE COLLEGE, PA — In a rematch of a five-set battle from earlier in the regular season, No. 24 Penn State dealt Maryland a three-set loss (25-19, 25-15, 25-14) on Sunday afternoon. 

The Nittany Lions (17-11, 11-7 Big Ten) captured early momentum in a strong first set and used it to pave the way for a sweep of the Terrapins (8-20, 1-17 Big Ten) in Maryland's final road match of the season. Haley Melby led the Terps with nine kills and an ace while Ajack Malual tallied seven kills and eight digs. 
  The Terps will return home for the last two matches of the regular season against Washington and Oregon.  How It Happened:
1st Set:
  • Melby recorded the Terps' first kill of the day.
  • Malual and Melby tallied kills as the set opened with a 3-3 tie. 
  • Lilly Wagner, Sydney Bryant, and Eva Rohrbach picked up kills as Maryland kept it close early.
  • PSU pulled ahead with a 5-1 run.
  • Melby picked up back-to-back kills late in the set. 
  • PSU won the first set 25-19.
2nd Set:
  • Penn State used a pair of aces in an 8-1 start to the set. 
  • Another ace expanded the Nittany Lions's lead to 14-7 early in the set.
  • A Melby kill gave Maryland its 10th kill of the set. 
  • Melby snagged an ace to cut the PSU lead to 19-12. 
  • Penn State took the second set 25-15.
3rd Set:
  • The Nittany Lions opened the final set with a 4-1 run. 
  • Wagner added a kill early in the set. 
  • A PSU ace put the Nittany Lions ahead 11-6.
  • Penn State pulled ahead late with another run.
  • The Nittany Lions took the final set 25-14.
