Terps Fall In Five-Set Bout With Ohio State

Maryland had a pair of Terps record a dozen kills in Saturday’s loss to the Buckeyes.

COLLEGE PARK, MD — Maryland battled with the Buckeyes for five sets (25-23, 16-25, 21-25, 25-11, 12-15) on Saturday at the Schanwald Pavilion. The Terps (8-15, 1-12 Big Ten) put an impressive rally together in the fourth set to force a winner-take-all frame, but Ohio State (4-17, 1-12 Big Ten) won the final set to claim a road victory. 

Ajack Malual added 16 kills and three aces to her impressive season totals to lead the Terps in scoring. Sydney Bryant and Katie Scherer chipped in the offensive efforts with 13 and eight respective kills. Maryland used five of its 10 total aces in the first set to start the afternoon with a 25-23 victory. Eva Rohrbach collected a pair of them late in the frame as a part of her five-kill, two-block, two-ace day.

After OSU captured the second and third sets, Maryland hit .452 and held the Buckeyes to a .000 hitting percentage to force the decisive fifth set. 

Duru Gökçen led Maryland's defensive efforts with 2.5 blocks to bring her season total to 109. The Buckeyes won the second, third and fifth sets to claim victory in College Park. How it Happened:
Set 1:
  • Kills from Malual gave the Terps their first three points of the afternoon. 
  • An ace from Lilly Wagner capped a 4-0 Terps run that put them ahead 9-7.
  • Addie Canady gave the Terps a 12-10 lead with an ace. 
  • Maryland got its 15th point of the set from a Malual ace.
  • The Buckeyes used a 5-0 run to claim an 19-16 advantage. 
  • Maryland responded with a 5-0 run as back-to-back aces from Rohrbach put Maryland up 21-19.
  • The Terps claimed the 25-23 set win as Rohrbach and Haley Melby teamed up for the clinching block.
Set 2:
  • Ohio State jumped out to a 4-1 lead. 
  • A 5-1 Terps run featured a Melby ace.
  • Maryland claimed a 10-7 lead with a Malual kill.
  • Back-to-back Buckeye aces in a 10-0 run gave OSU a 20-12 advantage. 
  • The Buckeyes held on for the 25-16 set win.
Set 3:
  • Ohio State used a pair of service aces to jump out to a 10-4 lead despite a pair of Byrant kills.
  • Malual got the Terps back in the set with back-to-back aces. 
  • A Scherer kill brought Maryland back within three and Wagner's second ace brought the deficit to two.
  • Another pair of OSU aces gave the Buckeyes a 20-17 lead.
  • Scherer gave the Terps their 20th point with a kill. 
  • The Buckeyes claimed the second set with a 25-21 win.
Set 4:
  • A couple early Gökçen kills helped move the set to an early 4-4 tie. 
  • Melby's fourth kill put the Terps up 6-4.
  • Back-to-back kills from Scherer got the Terps to 10 points in the set. 
  • OSU used a timeout as another Scherer kill put Maryland up 12-7.
  • A trio of Bryant kills gave the Terps a 16-8 advantage. 
  • Melby contributed more kills to put Maryland on the doorstep of victory.
  • Maryland won the fourth set 25-11 to force a decisive fifth set. 
Set 5:
  • A Scherer kill started the set. 
  • The Buckeyes used a 3-0 run to claim an early 5-2 lead. 
  • A Malual kill gave Maryland its fifth point of the set. 
  • The Terps called a timeout as OSU took a 10-6 lead.
  • A Melby kill kept the day going.
  • The Buckeyes won the day with a 15-12 set win.
