Fourth-Quarter Surge Lifts No. 10 Terps To 85-66 Win Over Georgetown

Maryland erased a double-digit deficit in a rivalry win over the Hoyas on Sunday afternoon.

COLLEGE PARK, MD — Maryland outscored Georgetown 34-9 in the fourth quarter to erase a 10-point deficit as the No. 10 Terps snatched a 85-66 victory from the Hoyas (1-1) at the XFINITY Center on Sunday. 

Maryland trailed by 10 with a minute to play in the third quarter, but Addi Mack and the Terps started the final frame with a 14-2 run to keep their unbeaten season alive. Mack came alive in the fourth quarter, scoring 17 of her 23 total points in the closing minutes. 
Saylor Poffenbarger was a force in the paint, grabbing 12 rebounds and dishing five assists on Sunday. Lea Bartelme picked up 13 points and five boards in her best game as a Terp. Oluchi Okananwa and Isimenme Ozzy-Momodu both finished with double-digit points (11 and 10, respectively) while Yarden Garzon and Marya Boiko each contributed nine points in Maryland's comeback effort.  Maryland put the game away late with an 18-2 run in the closing minutes to protect its second 3-0 start in as many seasons. The Terps have scored 80 or more points in each of their first three games for the first time since the start of the 2021-22 season.

Maryland was dominant below the rim, scoring 46 points in the paint and grabbing 45 rebounds (22 on offense). The Terps hit key shots from behind the arc as they shot 3/5 from three-point range during their comeback surge. 

 
How it Happened:
1st Quarter:
  • Garzon sank a three-point shot to get the day's scoring started. 
  • Georgetown used an early timeout as Maryland took a 7-0 lead. 
  • The Terps scored the afternoon's first nine points.
  • A Poffenbarger steal directly led to a Mack jumper to extend the lead. 
  • Welson contributed a late layup to get on the board early.
  • Mack had six first-quarter points as Maryland took a 16-13 lead into the second.
2nd Quarter:
  • After Georgetown took the lead with a three, Ozzy-Momodu rolled in a pair of layups to put the Terps back ahead. 
  • An Okananwa and-one put Maryland up 24-20 midway through the period. 
  • The Hoyas built a small lead with a 7-0 run.
  • Ozzy-Momodu led the Terps in the second quarter with six points.
  • Kyndal Walker sank a pair of free throws to end the quarter as Georgetown took a 36-31 lead into the break. 
3rd Quarter:
  • A pullup jumper from Okananwa got the Terps' scoring started in the third.
  • Boiko grabbed a steal and finished with a layup to spark a crowd pop.
  • Garzon responded to a Hoyas' three with a pivot and a jumper to keep UMD within seven.
  • Bartelme drilled a three to bring Maryland within four. 
  • Georgetown hit a pair of threes on consecutive possessions to extend its lead. 
  • Bartelme picked up a foul on a layup and hit her free throw in the final seconds of her six-point quarter.
  • Georgetown took a 57-51 lead into the fourth.
4th Quarter:
  • Mack rolled in a layup for the first points of the quarter. 
  • Mack brought the Terps all the way back with a layup and foul to put Maryland back ahead 58-57.
  • Layups from Garzon and Okananwa put Maryland up by three with seven minutes to play. 
  • Okananwa drained a three-pointer to force a Georgetown timeout with Maryland ahead 65-59.
  • A Poffenbarger three extended the Terps' lead midway through the frame. 
  • Maryland pulled away late with an 18-2 run.
  • The Terps held on for an 85-66 victory.
Numbers to Know:
  • 3: The Terps are 3-0 to start a season for a second straight season.
  • 8: Maryland finished the day hitting all eight of its final shots. 
  • 10: Maryland leads the all-time series with Georgetown 10-2. 
  • 10: The Terps erased a 10-point deficit and won for the first time since defeating Alabama in March after trailing 62-45.
  • 23: Mack led all scorers with 23 points. 
  • 34: Maryland outscored the Hoyas 34-9 in the fourth. The 34-point fourth quarter is tied for Maryland's third-most in a fourth quarter since quarters started in women's basketball in 2015-16.
  • 45: The Terps grabbed 45 rebounds (22 offensively) to Georgetown's 27.
  • 80: The Terps have scored 80 or more points in their first three games in a season for the first time since 2021-22.
