He served as liaison to the university's budget and controller's offices, among other duties. During his time at Miami, he also served as the sport administrator for Women's Soccer, Women's Golf, and notably with Men's Basketball during the Hurricanes' run to the 2023 Final Four.
"Welcoming Matt back home to Maryland is truly special for all of us, and we couldn't be more excited to have him rejoin the Terrapin family," said Smith. "His deep roots as a Maryland alum and his outstanding experience leading major athletic business operations make him the perfect fit to help guide our department forward. We're thrilled to have Matt and his wife Kelly return to the DMV, and we can't wait to see the impact he'll make on Maryland Athletics."
"I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to return home to Maryland and serve the university that shaped so much of my personal and professional life," Smale said. "This place has always meant a great deal to me, and I'm excited to work alongside Jim and the outstanding team here to support our student-athletes and strengthen the future of Maryland Athletics. Kelly and I are thrilled to be coming back, and I can't wait to get started."
Smale arrived in Coral Gables in July 2018 as the Assistant Athletics Director of Business Operations. Prior to Miami, Smale previously served in various roles in the Maryland Athletic Department. He was Director of Business Operations from 2016-18. He spent nearly five years with Maryland Athletics, beginning in November 2013 as an Accountant before being promoted to Assistant Director of Business Operations in October 2015.
Smale spent more than two years at George Washington University as a business/compliance assistant, and had previous experience with Major League Soccer's D.C. United and the Baltimore Orioles' minor league affiliate, the Bowie Baysox.
A native of Annapolis, Smale is a 2010 graduate from the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business. Smale graduated with his MBA from the University of Baltimore in December 2017. Matt and his wife, Kelly, will relocate to the DMV with Matt starting in his new role on Jan. 2, 2026.
