Kaylene Smikle Named Big Ten Player of the Week

ROSEMONT, IL – Junior Kaylene Smikle of the 17th-ranked Maryland women's basketball team (19-5, 9-4 B1G) was named Big Ten Player of the Week Monday for the second time this season.

Smikle averaged 28.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 58% from the field and went 17-19 from the free throw line in the Terrapins' two West Coast wins.

At Oregon Thursday, Smikle scored 21 points and went 10-for-10 at the free throw line with a season-high nine rebounds in the dominant road win.

In a come-from-behind win at Washington Sunday, Smikle dropped a career-high 36 points - the most by a Terp since 2019. She scored nine points in the first quarter to dig Maryland out of a 15-point deficit.

With the Terps up eight at half, she scored eight straight points and 11 of the Terps' first 13 points in the third to extend the lead. Smikle scored five straight points to start the fourth quarter, including a huge and-1 play when the Huskies cut the Terps' lead to four. She added eight rebounds, three blocks and two assists.

Smikle has scored in double figures in 23 straight games and 23 of 24 games played this season. She is currently No. 5 in the Big Ten in scoring with 18.3 points per game. Smikle was named Big Ten Player of the Week on Jan. 6, 2025.

Maryland returns home this week to host Nebraska (16-7, 7-5) Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the XFINITY Center in the Terrapins' annual Play 4 Kay Pink Game to support breast cancer awareness. Thursday's game will be televised on the Big Ten Network. Click here for tickets.
