Terps Fall To No. 1 Texas At Bevo Classic

AUSTIN, TX – Maryland softball was defeated by No.1 Texas, 13-4, in the Bevo Classic at Red and Charline McCombs Field on Friday evening. The Terps are 4-3 on the season, and this was their second of five games this weekend, including the first of two matchups against the Longhorns. 

The Longhorns used a five-run second inning and four-run fourth inning to remain undefeated and improve to 7-0 on the season. They also posted two-run spots in the first, third and fourth innings. 

The Terps scored all four of their runs in the top of the fifth inning. They loaded the bases with no outs and Sammi Woods hit an RBI single. Mazie MacFarlane and Caitlyn Cornwell followed with RBI groundouts. Matti Benson then brought Woods home with an RBI single. 

The four Terps consisted of six overall Terps who recorded hits in the game. Cornwell went 2-for-3, recording her second career performance with multiple hits. Mariah Penta and Madison Runyan also had hits in the contest. 

Julia Shearer started in the circle and 1.2 innings before Bri Godfrey took over. Godfrey pitched the remaining 2.1 innings. 

Texas' Katie Stewart (3-run HR), Kayden Henry (2-run HR), Leighann Goode (2-run HR) and Vanessa Quiroga (2-run HR) homered in the game. Stewart's and Henry's home runs occurred in the second inning, and Goode's and Quiroga's homers were in the fourth. 

The Terps will play the Longhorns again tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. EST.   


Breaking Down The Action
  • Texas scored first with a two-run RBI double in the first inning.
  • The Longhorns extended its lead in the second, scoring five runs on a three-run homer and a two-run homer to take a 7-0 lead.
  • Texas plated two more runs in the third with an RBI triple and RBI single. They led 9-0. 
  • The Longhorns added four final runs in the fourth with a pair of two-run homers. They led 11-0. 
  • The Terps played all four of their runs in the fifth. Sammi Woods and Matti Benson hit RBI singles. Mazie MacFarlane and Caitlyn Cornwell added RBI groundouts.

  • Maryland will continue its Bevo Classic play with two games tomorrow, Feb. 15. It will play against No. 1 Texas for the second time at 2:30 p.m. EST and No. 8 Texas Tech at 7:30 p.m. EST. The first game will be streamed on ESPN+.
