AUSTIN, TX – Freshman pitcher Aubrey Wurst earned her second career start in the circle and pitched her first career complete-game shutout as Maryland softball defeated UMass, 4-0, in the Bevo Classic at Red and Charline McCombs Field on Friday. With the win, the Terps improved to 4-2 overall.
The last Terrapin freshman to pitch a complete-game shutout was Trinity Schlotterbeck on March 7, 2020, as the Terps defeated Tulsa 5-0. Wurst had the best game of her young career yet, striking out a season-best nine batters and allowing just two hits. She regularly got the Terps out of jams, including one with bases loaded in the very first inning. The freshman was awarded her second win of the season.
Sydney Lewis drove in two of Maryland's four runs, each with an RBI single. She went 3-for-4 on the day for the first multi-hit game of the season. Through six games, she also leads the team with 10 RBIs.
Sam Bean and
Taylor Borovac drove in Maryland's other runs. Bean's came on a fielder's choice and Borovac's came on a groundout. Borovac's RBI was also the first of her career.
Mazie MacFarlane went 4-for-4 with a career-high four hits, including a double and two runs. She already has five doubles and three multi-hit games through six games this season.
Julia Shearer also finished with multiple hits, doing so for the third time in her career and the second time this season. The versatile pitcher and hitter went 2-for-4 with two singles.
Borovac was the final Terp to post a multi-hit performance. It was the first of her career. She went 2-for-4 with two singles. Overall, the Terps recorded 13 hits.
Caitlyn Cornwell and
Madison Runyan were the others who recorded hits.
UMass now sits at 3-3 overall. Lily Woodworth was the only player on the team to record a hit for UMass. She went 2-for-3 with a double and triple.
Breaking Down The Action
- Mazie MacFarlane hit a leadoff double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After two groundouts, Sydney Lewis drove MacFarlane home with a single through the left side. Aubrey Wurst got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom inning. The Terps struck first and took a 1-0 lead entering the second inning.
- UMass put two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the third, but Wurst got out of the jam once again. She had five strikeouts, and the Terps remained in front 1-0.
- The Terps added two runs in the fifth. Lewis drove in MacFarlane for the second time with a single. Sam Bean then drove in Caitlyn Cornwell on a fielder's choice. The Terps led 3-0 entering the bottom half.
- Maryland loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with no outs. They drove in one run for insurance courtesy of Taylor Borovac. It was the first RBI of her career, and the Terps led 4-0, needing three final outs to clinch the win.
- Wurst pitched a 1-2-3 final inning to earn a complete game shutout.
