Terps Wrap-Up Carolina Classic With Loss To Queens, 5-4

CHAPEL HILL, NC – Maryland softball wrapped up play in the Carolina Classic as it was defeated by Queens University (NC), 5-4, at Anderson Softball Stadium on Sunday. Maryland is now to 5-8 heading into its first three-game series of the season against Belmont in Nashville.  

Maryland scored two runs in the bottom of the first as Sydney Lewis drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, and Sam Bean recorded an RBI double. However, Queens (3-3) scored all five of its runs in the top of the second and held on despite a late rally by the Terps. 

Sammi Woods hit the second home run of her career with a solo shot in the bottom of the second. She went 2-for-3, recording multiple hits with two runs in the game. The Terps scored one final run in the game in the sixth, as Lewis recorded an RBI single.   

Bri Godrey made her second appearance on the circle over the weekend. She pitched her third career complete game while striking out a career-high nine batters. She gave up just three earned runs and pitched six scoreless innings outside of the second frame. 

Mazie MacFarlane, Madison Runyan, and Mariah Penta were other Terps who recorded hits in the contest. 


Breaking Down The Action
  • Sydney Lewis recorded an RBI sacrifice fly, and Sam Bean added an RBI double to give the Terps a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. 
  • Queens then added five runs in the top of the second to take a 5-2 lead. 
  • Sammi Woods cut into the Queens' lead with a solo homer in the bottom of the inning. 
  • Mazie MacFarlane reached on an error, allowing Woods to score in the sixth. The Terps trailed 5-4.
