COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland baseball senior catcher Alex Calarco was named the Golden Spikes Award Player of the Week, awarded for the top performance in college baseball for the previous week. This comes after a weekend where Calarco hit a pair of grand slams and had a whopping 12 RBI in just three games.
Calarco finished the weekend with a .571 batting average, two home runs, 12 RBI, and a slugging percentage of 1.143. In Friday's game against Western Carolina, Calarco had a 4-for-5 day with five RBI and his first of two grand slams in the weekend. Calarco followed up that performance on Saturday by going 3-for-5 with six RBI and his second grand slam of the series. Calarco currently leads the NCAA in RBI with 20 and is second in the country in home runs with five. The senior catcher has three grand slams through six games, a part of a Maryland offense that has six grand slams through its first six games.
The last Terp to earn the honor was Matt Shaw for the week of May 9, 2022.
Calarco was also named the Solomon Eye Terp of the Week on Monday. Each week during the 2024-25 season a Maryland student-athlete, who has shown excellence on and off the playing field, will be selected as the Solomon Eye Physicians & Surgeons Terp of the Week. Calarco was also named the top offensive performer of the weekend by D1Baseball.
The Terps are back in action on Tuesday as they host Delaware in their home opener. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. and will air on Big Ten Plus and the Maryland Baseball Network.
