Terps Lose Tight Contest To No. 23 Virginia, 7-6

Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, VA – Maryland baseball was narrowly defeated by No. 23 Virginia, 7-6, at Virginia Credit Union Stadium on Tuesday evening. Maryland is now 8-8 heading into its matchup with Mount St. Mary's at home tomorrow.

The Cavaliers (10-5) scored the walk-off, game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth on a wild pitch. Despite the loss, Maryland's offense made a late surge, scoring three runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game up 6-6. Chris Hacopian kicked off the scoring with an RBI double, followed by Alex Calarco with an RBI groundout, and Hacopian reaching home plate on a passed ball. Hacopian went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
The Cavaliers scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-3 lead — its first of the game. They later added a two-run homer for insurance, heading into the game's final inning.

Elijah Lambros hit an RBI triple in the top of the third inning, giving Maryland an early 1-0 lead. Lambros' triple marked the fifth of his career and first of the season. Virginia subsequently tied the game an inning later, but a Jacob Orr sacrifice fly and a Hollis Porter RBI single gave Maryland a 3-1 lead in the sixth.
Jake Yeager made his third career start and pitched an impressive five innings. The freshman allowed one earned run on five hits. Cristofer Cespedes replaced Yeager in the sixth, retiring two batters before Andrew Johnson pitched the remaining 2.1 innings and struck out two batters.

Along with Orr's sac fly, he added a double as one of two Terps to record an extra-base hit. Brayden Martin went 2-for-5 as the only other Terp to record multiple hits.
