Community Support for Maryland Athletics on Full Display During Campus-Wide Giving Day

The University of Maryland raised over $5.3 million in philanthropic support during its annual Giving Day event, with Maryland Athletics garnering a top-three finish in total dollars ($609,197) and a top-four finish in total donors (686) among campus departments.

The one-day, campus-wide fundraising tradition brings together dozens of departments and organizations to raise critical funding and engage the community to advance the University of Maryland's mission. Maryland Athletics supports this mission through investments in scholarships, facilities and other championship resources needed to enhance the student-athlete experience and remain competitive in a constantly evolving intercollegiate athletics landscape.

"The importance of philanthropic support from our community cannot be overstated," said Damon Evans, Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics. "Those who gave back this Giving Day are empowering our student-athletes to be successful both on and off the playing surfaces, helping our programs compete for conference and national championships, and furthering our university's mission."

The $5.3 million raised from nearly 9,000 donors was a 25.7% increase from 2024. Athletics also saw growth, raising almost $50,000 more for athletics-related initiatives while increasing the donor count year over year. The department boasted 100% participation from head coaches and senior staff.

In addition, all athletics-related Giving Day funds received donations, including the Terrapin Club Impact Fund, Athletics Gift Fund, Building Champions Facilities Campaign, Fearless Women Fund and sport-specific funds representing all 20 programs.

Many supported projects included scholarship endowments honoring the lives and legacies of John Brown, the Co-Founder and Owner of RJ Bentley's; Jerry Claiborne, Hall of Fame Head Maryland Football coach from 1972-81; and Christopher A. Cason, a 2015 UMD alum.

"The power of philanthropy was on full display this Giving Day," said Kirby Mills, Senior Associate Athletic Director/Chief Development Officer. "Maryland Athletics and the University of Maryland hold a special place in the hearts of so many, and that appreciation came through in their generosity."
