McCoy’s Dominance On Mound Leads Terps Past USF, 5-2

TAMPA, FL –  Kyle McCoy pitched a career-high tying eight innings as Maryland baseball defeated USF, 5-2, in game one at the USF Baseball Stadium on Friday evening. The Terps improved to 10-8 overall heading into game two tomorrow at 2 p.m. 

McCoy improved to 3-0 on the mound this season, stifling USF (7-8) batters all evening. He struck out seven batters and surrendered just one earned run on six hits. Joey McMannis recorded the final three outs, earning his first career save. 

  The Terps scored four of their runs in the first and fifth innings. Alex Calarco and Aden Hill each batted in runs in each inning. They both finished the game with two RBIs, although they combined for just one hit. Calarco now has 37 RBIs through 18 games to lead the Terps. 

Elijah Lambros dove in the other run for the Terps in the eighth inning on a single. 

Brayden Martin went 4-for-5, recording a career-best four hits. He also came around to score a run. EJ Hankerson was the only other Terp to record multiple hits. He went 2-for-3 with a run. It was just the second multi-hit game of his career. Hankerson also hit his first extra-base hit in the game.

  • Maryland took an early two-run lead in the opening inning, which was scored by a sac-fly from Alex Calarco and an RBI single through the left side by Aden Hill
  • Kyle McCoy retired the side with a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the first.
  • USF scored its first run off a wild pitch in the second.
  • The Terps increased their lead to 4-1 in the fifth. Calarco walked with the bases loaded, and Hill reached on a fielder's choice, scoring a run.
