WEST LAFAYETTE, IN -- The University of Maryland women's tennis team was defeated by Purdue 4-2 on Sunday, despite a fierce comeback bid from the Terps after trailing by three.
Purdue got going first, taking the No. 2 doubles match 6-3 over
Diya Challa and
Danielle Hack. With the doubles point on the line, both the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches were tied at 6-6. In the No. 1 doubles match
Kallista Liu and
Ema Kovacevic battled hard, going back and forth and forcing a tiebreaker. Purdue pulled away, eventually winning the No. 1 doubles match, clinching the doubles point.
In the No. 3 doubles match
Tamari Gagoshidze and
Oliwia Orlinska were also in a great match up, and were leading the tie breaker 6-5 when the doubles point was clinched.
Purdue kept things going in singles, picking up wins in the No. 5 and No. 1 singles matches to move ahead 3-0.
Danielle Hack got Maryland's first point of the match, taking the No. 3 singles match 7-5, 6-4.
Diya Challa pulled Maryland within one, winning a hard fought No. 6 singles match.
Oliwia Orlinska battled with Purdue's Juana Larranaga in the No. 4 singles match, after losing the first set 6-2, Orlinska pushed the second set to 6-6, forcing a tiebreaker that was hard fought, with Larranaga winning 7-5.
Ema Kovacevic was leading the No. 2 singles match in the third set when Purdue clinched the match.
