Wurst And Ebaugh Combine For Shutout In Victory Over Colgate, 9-0

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Aubrey Wurst and Genevieve Ebaugh combined for a shutout as Maryland softball defeated Colgate, 9-0, in five innings at Maryland Softball Stadium on Tuesday evening. Maryland improved to 13-12 heading into its trip to Oklahoma City.

Wurst did the heavy lifting by pitching four innings and being awarded the fourth win of her freshman campaign. She allowed just one hit, striking out four and walking two batters. Ebaugh recorded the final three outs, striking out three Colgate (8-16) batters and allowing one baserunner on a walk.

Offensively, five Terps recorded an RBI. However, Sam Bean notched two, breaking the game open in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run home run to left center. The homer put the Terps above the eight-run threshold and allowed the game to end early after they recorded the final three outs in the top of the fifth. The home run was the 11th of Bean's career and her third of the season.
Other Terps to drive in a run were Mazie MacFarlane, Sydney Lewis, Bailey Murphy and Sammi Woods. Two of the other runs were scored on an error, and the other was on a stolen base at home plate.

Lewis went 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored. She's swinging a hot bat with six hits and six RBIs over her last three games.
  Breaking Down The Action
  • Maryland took an early 3-0 lead in the opening inning after Caitlyn Cornwell stole home plate, and Sydney Lewis and Bailey Murphy each hit RBI doubles.
  • The Terps extended its lead to 7-0 in the third. Sammi Woods doubled through the right side, driving in a run. The double was followed by back-to-back fielding errors that drove in three runs. Mazie MacFarlane then hit an RBI double to left field.
  • Sam Bean blasted a home run to left center, tacking on two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Genevieve Ebaugh recorded the final three outs of the game in the fifth inning.
