Terps Lose Nailbiter To Michigan, 5-2

Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY – Maryland softball lost its second matchup with Michigan, 5-2, at Devon Park on Friday. Maryland is now 13-14 overall and 2-3 in conference play. The Terps wrap up their four-day slate of games with two matchups against Purdue on Saturday and Sunday.

Despite a leadoff solo home run by Mazie MacFarlane in the bottom of the first to get the Terps in the scoring column first, Michigan (22-8, 2-0 Big Ten) scored five unanswered runs to secure the win. Three of the runs were scored in a bases-clearing double with bases loaded by Ella Stephenson in the bottom of the sixth. The Terps later ended the run with an RBI single by Julia Shearer
MacFarlane's homer was her third of the season and eight as a Terp. She has 12 home runs overall in her career between her time at Maryland and Utah State.

Shearer, who was the Terps' starting pitcher in the circle, pitched her sixth career complete game. She allowed four earned runs on seven hits and struck out two batters.

Sam Bean and Madison Runyan were other Terps who recorded an extra-base hit in the game. They each recorded a double. Sydney Lewis went 3-for-4 with multiple hits. Shearer also posted a two-hit game, going 2-for-2.

  • Michigan hit a bases-clearing double with bases loaded in the sixth to increase its lead to 5-1.
  • Julia Shearer hit an RBI single in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to 5-2.
  • Shearer pitched a 1-2-3 top of the seventh inning, but the Terps couldn't score the game-tying or go-ahead runs in the bottom of the inning. With the tying run at the plate, Lauren Derkowski struck out Maryland's batter.
